Sounding rocket paper models
 

Hello All,

I just came across “Zach’s PaperSat Designs” (see: http://zpdmodels.com/srockets.htm ), which has numerous downloadable paper models of satellites, spacecraft, and sounding rockets. Some (on the Ecardmodels website, linked to his) are for sale, but many others are free. The free sounding rocket models are:

My son built a Black Brant II cardstock model about 10 years ago from here . It was an excellent flier.

I hadn't seen that site in years (among many other models, it also even has a downloadable version of the classic Gulf Oil Lunar Module cardstock model!!! [anyone who can remember getting an original one at a Gulf filling station, as I can, was almost certainly there for the actual Apollo 11 landing :-) ]). If the completed Black Brant II could be sprayed with some kind of thin, wicking and clear resin (perhaps from a misting-type pump spray bottle), such a paper model should be amply durable to last for a long time and many flights. Also:

Zach's site has an incorrectly-identified Skylark model (the Black Brant I, II, and V motors [and the Black Brant IV's first stage motor] were/are "Canadianized" Skylark motors) and I sent him the following regarding it:

"A while back I had posted a link to your excellent paper rocket models website on the “Ye Olde Rocket Forum” (see: http://www.oldrocketforum.com/showt...0167#post230167 ). Today I saw that another YORF member had posted a notice that you have added more sounding rocket paper models (they make the best flying scale model rocket subjects, being fin-stabilized like model rockets). Thanks for that link and reminding me of the site. I had been there before, but I didn't remember seeing the links to the full 1/48th scale Saturn V paper model. I've now managed to download the files, and am looking forward to giving it a try.

Someday, I'd love to make a flyable 1/48th scale version. Yes, I know that there are other scales that are already out there, but 1/48th scale is my thing (****ed Aspergers).

The LJ II from that site is pretty nice also. My son built it after the BB II, but way before Estes re-released the current LJ II kit. It was very light weight but large and was great for tiny field demos of larger models. A B6-4 was perfect, IIRC. He built the tower from dowel rod, like the early Estes Mercury Redstone kit.

There is a build thread for this where the guy up-sized to 1/24 on papermodelrs.com website. Should help with your build, as the guy really did great photos and explained in detail issues while building.

Just so you know, there are some design issues with the 1/48 from the link. They were corrected and available at papermodelers as well. Going there now to get the links talking about.

These changes are authorized by original designer. Not Sure if Lower Hudson has the updated version. The guy who did the re-design probably updated the ones at Lower Hudson too, just not sure.

I see that a Canadian group built and flew a nearly-full-scale, HPR model of the French Dauphin (Dolphin) sounding rocket (see: http://zpdmodels.com/models/Dauphin...ng%20Rocket.pdf ), as noted on the same PDF page containing the plans & patterns for their Dauphin paper model (the patterns and plans are right below the note and picture of the big Dauphin HPR scale model). Thank you, Dave! So much has happened, and so much time has passed, that I couldn't recall which all "new" ones had been added; I just saw that some 'unfamiliar' (in that list) rockets had appeared since I last looked at it.

When much happens, and when time goes by, that is the time when we must pick up the pieces and keep moving forward !

Nice! The operational (bulbous-payload [the test version had a short conical nose filled with seven tonnes of concrete ballast for stability!]) Falstaff was used to test the UK's Chevaline system, an advanced decoy system for their two-re-entry vehicle version of the Polaris A3 (externally it looked like a regular Polaris A3; the Chevaline equipment was inside the payload fairing--Chevaline sacrificed the normal third RV for a much greater probability of foiling Soviet ABM systems). HEROS 3 might be "kit-bash-able" from an Estes UP Aerospace SpaceLoft kit. I'd love to see a Terrier-Improved Malemute (it seems to be "today's Nike-Apache"), made of model rocket materials/parts (stay tuned...)--ditto for the Talos-Terrier-Oriole!

The Operational Falstaff looks like an Honest Goon.
I left the engine nozzle off the HEROS 3, might fly it with a MicroMaxx motor.
I used 110# cardstock, instructions recommend 65#, which would have been better.
Had some difficulty working with the thicker paper.
