Looking for BARCLONES in the wild

I'm trying to update our Wordpress blog, and I'd like to know which BARCLONE designs have actually been built and flown? I am aware of a few besides the ones I've built, but I need to find out what additional models are out there.

If you've built one of the many designs we have listed, please give a reply here and describe your flight experience with it.

Thanks in advance!

Cloud Tickler

I found this thread from last year and was shocked that no one had replied. With all the BARCLONE designs, no one else out there has taken any from pixels to reality? I was in that group until today. So having ordered parts for a few a while back, I went down to the shop and assembled the Cloud Tickler. This is from the original design posted a few years back.

Ya know, if you get some French flags and military markings....... :D

Shamefully silly question, but, has it flown?

Nice build! Any idea which way you'll go with the finish?

What? Are you dissing my French Tickler idea?

Has not flown.

I also have the parts for the Nightwing, after that is built I'll heat up the garage enough to paint them (current OAT in the 40's).

Have either of these been built previously that you are aware of?

Nightwing will be flat black.

Your original .rkt file was all white with a gold nose. This is what I"ll do:

No, just had to think about it... :D

How about using the French Aerobatic Team pattern?

That way, if the stability isn't exactly right, you can still claim authenticity from the resulting flight profile... :D

I have built and flown my "SkyBreaker". Flies great but you have to reinforce the triple tubes due to their length. Given another go at it, I'd also do the fins in basswood and make them TTW.

I have also built and flown my "Long Dart". Flew straight as an arrow at launch, but the rear-ejection failed and it became a spear! Has since been repaired and will fly with conventional ejection the next time. Fins are delicate and should be reinforced or done in basswood.

I don't know if I ever submitted it, but I also designed one called the "Double Barrel". Silly name, but a great rocket. It flew pretty well until only one engine lit and it cartwheeled into the ground and smashed up. I may rebuild it at some point in the future but for now it's being used for parts.

Nice set of designs, Dale! That "Double Barrel" looks great climbing out. I can see, though, how a single-engine-out could cause instant trouble. If you feel like it, work that up as a RKT file and post it.

BTW, which way did it start cartwheeling? Toward the dead engine, I'd suspect. If only we could do tubes on an angle instead of just along the centerlines...

Thanks, I loved that rocket. I'll have to rebuild it sometime. Yes, it did cartwheel towards the dead engine. It was pretty heavy with all that fin area at the bottom, and originally the vent holes were too small and I blew out one side of one of the engine pods. If I rebuild it, I may try to either cant the engine pods or something to allow for a larger vent hole.

Here's a build thread from RocketReviews.com

Here's the RockSim file

Here's a video

The second launch is where the vent hole problem surfaced. I used two D-12 engines and one engine mount blew out completely and it came in tail-first. I found the engine mount believe it or not and eventually repaired the hole. It flew one more time successfully before the final crash.

CPMcGraw 11-16-2011 03:03 PM

You could actually see the mount ejecting in the video. That was also one clean-cut blow out line around the tube.

Still had a good boost, up to that point.

I've got the RKT file now, so I can look it over. Thanks!

I've built and flown my submissions to Barclone;
F-52 Thark
Omega Centuri Probe
Big Blue Bird Zero

and also

Mini Loader
Cherokee Double-D w/payload

All have flown well. Jim Fustini has also built and flown the F-52 Thark and it flew great.

Those were impressive. I'm guessing the flights were C11 then D12?
Craig, I'm planning on sending the Viking 6 design in if the prototype flies well next weekend.

Yes on both counts. Now I'm really going to have to rebuild it one of these days!

I have built and flown my Ascendant as well as her Periwinkle. Both are open fin designs.

The Ascendant is heavy and requires a C6-3. Her's flies about the same as the Goblin.

Craig,

3-Stage Estes Omega
Did not build or fly. I have plans to build this.

Aiptek Mini PenCam 1.3 Booster
Did not build or fly.

Cherokee II (LOC Big Nuke)
Did not build or fly.

EnerJet Egg Crate KE-4 (revised) 24mm & 29mm
Built and flown. Ellis G35-10 single use.

Lipse Two
Did not build or fly.
The new Estes Astron Elliptic II looks so much like it ..... well, I guess I'll just buy theirs :)

Loon-E Lander
Did not build or fly. I have parts to build this but it has taken a back burner to other projects.

Lune R-1 Plus 1
Built, not flown.

Mach 1 Dart with RX-1 Thruster System
Built and flown. I no longer have any originals. Just the clone I built with SEMROC parts.

SLS Lune R-1
Built and flown. Flew great with D12-5, F42-8T and G77-10R RMS. I used a 1/4" 72" rod for all flights. (At least a 48" rod for the D12 flights would be recommended)

SLS Magnum-D Hornet
Did not build or fly.

SSRS-Lasor134
Built and flown. Motors I remember using with good results: D12-5, F20-7W & F27-8R and several flights with Ellis G35-10 (now out of production). D12-5 for a great low altitude flight and easy recovery close to pad with streamer. F and G motors, choose longest delay possible. Great early sounding rocket design and can be dropped fast with streamer without damage. One of my personal favorites to bring to the big field in Winnsboro, LA.

Worm Loader
Did not build or fly. What I was thinking that weekend when this design popped in my head!

Will soon be posting the Centuri AEC design file to BARCLONE. I have a few proven flights on it ..... just need to tweak the RockSim files since they were originally made in or around 2007 in the days before we had better SEMROC parts databases in RockSim to design with so all the part numbers/descriptions may not be 100% accurate so I was going to correct as much as I could before posting.

:)
