RC RG's based on the Cosmic Interceptor parts
 

Here are a bunch of RC RG spings based on the Cosmic Interceptor kit,
This one done to simulate an F-101 voodoo. For simplicity, I made the T-tail fixed and reduced the size and moved the wing back slightly to use just elevon control and not have to mess with t-tail mechanism and tail weight. I angle cut the rear tube 6" and have the motor forward and on the centerline. Needed no balast, dry was 10.5 oz rtf and just over 11 ounces painted with markings. I chose operation sun-run colors with a little artistic license. Pseudo afterburner cans are 24mm tubes sliced in half and flattened at the front and glued to the side, they were painted with stainless steel along with the lower half of the rear bod. Rest was testors falt gray. Colors are vinyl hand cut with some lettering from office depot.

The elevons are actually inboard and from the red line back and out to about the first 1" of what would be the aileron on the real plane. I avoided using the actual ailerons since they are smalll and can lead to tip stall when used as elevons.

Boosts and glides very well, even given the small wing area. 38" long, 24" wingspan, 2" diameter and 11 oz rtf.

That looks great. Always loved the Voodoo's lines. Used by the Canadian air force for many years. Fast, and at air shows they would always make a point of doing a high speed pass and then pulling up and going to afterburners.

The actual airplane did not have much of a role in the USAF as it was pretty much a plane without a useful mission. Lousy as a fighter and there were better/more maneuverable nuclear delivery platforms. One useful mission it served was being the carrier of the Genie nuclear rocket. It was used to intercept enemy bombers in that role, but never actually deployed a functional Genie rocket.
With the Genie's nuclear warhead, no guidance was required. Fire it near the bomber formation and it blew up anything within a huge radius.

Deployed operationally I think you mean?? They launched a Genie at the Nevada Test Site and detonated it 10,000 feet overhead of five volunteers standing directly below the blast... and including the Japanese-American cameraman (the sixth man) filming it for the Lookout Mountain Laboratory, which did all the US nuclear test photography (1352d Photographic Group).

Now that I think about it, that might have been launched by a Scorpion, not a Voodoo... I'd have to check.

Century Series Jets...
 

None of the Century Series jets were designed as "classic" fighters.

Including the missions of interceptor, long range bomber escort, tac nuke delivery, they were all great airplanes for their time.
Recall that many of these were designed/developed fairly shortly post WWII/Korea.

The RF-101 held its own much as the Wild Weasel F-105 did; doing a job they were never designed
to do in the first place. I'm impressed that the aircraft designers/engineers were able to
modify and keep them in use as long as they did. For example, the Georgia ANG used 105s 'till '83 or so.

The Century Series were some of the greatest designs; the 105's "wasp waist" fuselage being
an example. A friend of mine who flew for South West described flying the "nickle" as the fastest plane on the deck;
nothing could catch it at the time. Mach 2 at altitude didn't hurt either :-)
