A scale question for the members on the Thor Able
 

This question concerns the decal stripe pattern on the upper stage.

This was never a kit so we have to figure it out.

Look at the images I've listed.

The one picture that's titled Thor Able second stage I believe should be the third stage.

The decal appears, to me, as shown to be only on one side.

I actually think it's on both sides of that stage with the upside down Y between the two vertical "UNITED STATES" decal.

One picture of round 219 shows the "Y" on the left of the UNITED STATES.
The picture listed as "second stage" shows it on the right.

To me it seems like a roll pattern. The last image I posted is my drawing of it.

The second question on the roll pattern I posted is the tips of the "Y".
It looks to me like they come to a point at the bottom just under the "S".

Does it come to a point or is it flat on the bottom?

To answer one of your questions, that "Y" DEFINITELY looks FLAT to me at the bottom on the pics if you zoom in enough. It does not look pointed at all to me.
Also, the stage suggested/labeled as 'second', I also believe to be the THIRD stage, not the second.

It looks to me like the bottom of the inverted Y comes under the last S in states. I also think it the top is lower - looks roughly like it starts under the D of united. I wonder if there is only one Y and two United states, because two Ys would come together in the mis-labled image 2nd stage

OK, just looking at some googled images with "USAF" markings on the 2nd stage, it looks like there is just one inverted Y, and from you photos and the ones I spotted, the bottom looks flat.

I think the bottom of the inverted Y is flat as well. On the round pictured in Peter's ROTW (round 130) the transition between the second and third stages is black. It would make sense that the inverted Y ran into, and was flush with, the transition. It wouldn't make sense for it to have ended in a point just above the transition.

The final question is ...

Is there 1 "UNITED STATES" decal on the second stage?

BTW that IS the second stage! The third stage is just a tiny thing under the satellite.

In one picture is shows the UNITED STATES on the right of the "Y" and in another round it has the UNITED STATES on the left of the "Y".

There is either 2 UNITED STATES decals or they did it different on different rounds.

On the proof attached I have two roll patterns for the second stage, each with 2 UNITED STATES decal.

Easy to remove with a pair of scissors.

There are some extras on the page just to fill up the sheet.

You are Correct here, The 2 Inverted "Y" decals go on opposite sides, on the Bottom-like you say. They join at the bottom where they meet--U just cant see them from the 1 sided picture. If you could lay the tube out 'flat', the decal would look like a pointed 'V, on the out sides of united states ones. Dan

What sized model will you be making the decal sheet for?

The decals are for a BT-60 first stage, the same size as the old K-28 Thor Agena.

This is for a Thor Able round 219 Thor Able IV.
