New Generation Spacesuits
 

I was looking at the onboard Starliner link and got to thinking about the suits that will be used on the flight and on Space-X missions.

Just from an aesthetic point of view, Boeing's blue suit looks cool, but I hate the odd shaped permanently attached helmet. Put the classic detachable helmet back on it! I don't care if it does cost more.

I don't like much of anything about Space-X's suit. It looks like it belongs on a low budget sci-fi movie with an all female cast. Well, low and behold, it was designed by a Hollywood costume designer and it's a onesie! Where's the puke emoticon?

On the positive side, they look like they will be very comfortable (uninflated) compared to the bulky shuttle era suits, and it makes sense that they won't need to be as robust since they aren't designed to protect an astronaut in free fall after bailing out of the spacecraft. I'd feel ok in the Boeing suit, but I'd be a little paranoid in the Space-X version. :eek:

Yeah, the Space-X suit looks like something that may have been designed for the TV show Space: 1999. Kind of a mid-70s vibe goin’ on, to me anyway.

The Boeing suit looks a little more like what we are used to seeing when it comes to ‘space suits’, but neither one ‘looks’ like it is beefy enough to do the job. Not that *I* know exactly what those parameters are, specifically.

I guess we (us here) have all grown up with the space age and we all have been programmed to believe a space suit has to be just shy of sheet metal to do its job.

Remember, these are 'pressure suits' not 'spacesuits'.
Only for use inside a capsule in case of pressure loss.

FWI, Virgin Galactic 'flight suits' are designed by Under Armour.

That description is truly hilarious! I agree completely!

I know they are just last resort pressure suits, however their media folks are calling them "spacesuits". ;)
