Estes Solo
 

This is an interesting boost glider. Wish Hobby Lobby had another one. It's kinda reminiscent of my high school days when we'd make loops out of paper and attach them to pencils and fly them through the classroom. Yeah, a type of paper plane.

When I was a member of COSROCS, we had a regional meet with CRASH in Denver. One of the fun events was paper airplane boost glide duration (along with a six-pack egg loft.....yes, it gave purpose to the Super Big Bertha). We didn't win the event but it sure fueled the imagination. Couldn't figure out how to get my ring glider into the air.

Now Estes came out with one. Not quite the design from my youth but still reminds me of the paper ring gliders.

This makes a perfect winter project because there is no painting involved. The only "craftsman" work is cutting out the glider from the provided pattern. The pattern is just taped into the ring so if you save a cut-out, you can make all different kinds of gliders from colored cardstock/poster board or print out your own design. Really fast and easy build. I'm planning on flying mine at the MSRS launch this coming weekend.

The original Solo instructions had only the C6-3 as a
recommended engine.
I've launched mine with a B6-2 on a smaller field.
Estes now recommends a B6-2, C5-3 and C6-3.

You'll probably be very surprised how well it glides!

I used a B6-4 in low winds and it is a nice flight. The C flew for close to a minute and almost out flew my field.

I noticed the packaging only list the C6-3. I thought it would probably do well on a B6-4. Of course, I've got plenty of C6-3s in my stash...... ;)

B6-4 is too long a delay - better with a B6-2 or C6-3.

I believe the Solo and Neon Tiger are the same kit, different finishes. Since the Neon Tiger has been replaced in the Estes catalog with the Solo, one can assume that the Neon Tiger will at some point be on clearance. Either from Estes or online retailers.

On the Estes website, I could find the Neon Tiger but not the Solo. They look the same but the Solo packaging list it as an inch longer (25.3" vs 24.3") than the Neon Tiger. But, using my unpublished, and hopefully calibrated, Stanley 25' Leverlock 3-way blade tape measurer and eyeballing it (i get my eyes calibrated every year), the Solo is actually closer to the 24.3" length of the Neon Tiger. Comparing part numbers on the instructions, everything is the same except the launch lug and body tubes (no part number provided for the Solo BT). Another example of changing the paint and calling it something else. I'm surprised the auto industry hasn't caught onto that.......

Did you try a four second delay? The second flight on my solo was on a B6-2 and my log notes “short delay”. After that flight, I have logged seven flights on my Solo using B6-4s, and several in my log note “Perfect delay”. The glide is around 17 seconds. There are no mods that make it heavier, and it is flow straight up when there is little wind. If there was wind or the rod was angled, I would go with the B6-2.
