Kyle Newman built a pretty big Little Joe II replica and launched it at a SoAR event in Taylorsville, GA back in April. Check out his Facebook page:

You guys that haven't seen that article really need to be NAR members and read the magazine that comes with it. ;)

I want to build a 1/12 scale Little Joe - using the MRC 1/12th Mercury Capsule plastic model kit for the capsule. But I've been unable to come up with an appropriately sized body tube to match the scale of the capsule.
I have built a couple of 1/12th Mercury Redstone rockets using that same plastic model kit - main body tube is a 5.5" Blue Tube which is a little undersized, but close enough that I'm the only one that'll notice :p . |
What powered that LJII in the April launch ?
Regardless, one should be able to do it wherever they pleez, without ANY sort of HP License. Should have access to through "P" sized motors without any sort of cert either. |
I buiult a 1/22 scale, 7" diameter Little Joe-II using .020" styrene sheet for the main body. The scale factor and diamter was defined by the 22" length of the styrene sheet I could get at the time.
The 48" tall 7" model weighed 4 pounds. No, that would be a "typical" model over-built by most HPR builders. It weighed 1.5 pounds, plus 4 ounces of noseweight, not including engines. More info on my website, scroll down. Unfortunately, few pics of that model. http://georgesrockets.com/GRP/Scale/DATA/George.htm For a 1/12 Little Joe -I, it would be of similar diameter. I will note I built mind so the fins plugged in, at 45 degrees (Diagonally from top-down so acceleraiton would keep them on), so that on landing if they hit hard they might "pop off" without breaking. That also was a big bonus for transporting the model. |

If you're interested in building a 1/12 scale Little Joe, you might take a look at this thread on The Other Forum: https://www.rocketryforum.com/threa...mponent.130403/ If you'd like to see it fly you can go to the 18:30 point of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxdoJJZrUP4 James |
I was looking at the possibility of a larger scale LJII based on the Boyce Apollo Abort Capsule. I even contacted them suggesting they make a builders kit, that was a couple years ago. It would be too expensive I guess. A larger scale kit would be nice!

Upscale LJI or LJII would be a fairly straight forward model to scratch build. Except for the funky conical nose cone/Capsule. Does anyone have a lead on large (6+") conical nose cones? I had checked the usual suspects (PML, LOC, WM, MC, Apogee), and stubby conical nose cones are just not in vogue for large diameter / HP applications. |
