German Luft 46 Rocket plane scratch build
Got started on this today. Been thinking about it for awhile. Being that I'm a WW2 nut, and love the German what if stuff, how could I resist? I have built two RC jets to date from scratch of both the TA-183 and he ME 1101. So why not one of their manned rockets?
It's based around a B-60 body tube and I'm making my own nosecone and tail cone from balsa that I will later make a silicone mold from and produce from slush cast Alumilite. I can make that stuff real thin and quite light. Wings and tail will be made from balsa of course. I will be making a plug tomorrow to vacuum form the canopy. Nice thing is if I lose or destroy the first one trying to get things right I can make as many as I want. Maybe even a kit if it strikes anyone's fancy. I know I know I said I wouldn't be making anymore kits. But heck this is a lot easier than making RC jet or submarine! She's about 18 inches or so and will fly on a B6-5 or what ever you like within reason. LOL! So I started here. A chunk of balsa. since I don't have a lathe so I had to do it the old fashion way with a good eye and a lot of sanding. But I used this 40 grit stuff and it made short work of it in a hurry! Brutal. What I did was to find center and mark off the block and cut it to basic shape on the band saw. Then used the 40 grit and beat it into shape. When I got it close I used some blue painter's tape around a body tube and saned it to match the tube. By the way I used the same method for the tail cone you will later see. Additionally I made a balsa base insert to attach to the tail cone and nose cone. continued in part 2. Last edited by U812 : 09-14-2009 at 12:18 PM. |

So that didn't come out too bad. Next to preen it and primer. Good old polyurethane floor sealer coated on. Some red putty to fill the holes and scratches. Body tube cut using the methods you guys taught me right here. And both the cones on and in the preening process. Close up of the tail cone. It still needs more work tomorrow but not much. OK it's looking kind of sexy. That's enough for one day I'm off to bed. But this ought to keep you busy for awhile. Tomorrow I'll make some silicone molds. That should be fun huh? And I'll start the canopy form and cut the wings and surfaces. It should start looking like some other than a torpedo for one of my RC subs by then. Steve |

Nice. Is there a reason that your nose cone isn't as pointy compared to the actual V2?

Believe it or not it's easier to do by hand than the more pointy one and easier to cast with less trapped air issues. As I said this is loosely based.
When I slosh cast resin for boats and subs parts in the past I have found the tighter the space the more you get trapped air and rejects. Thanks Leo. Ya I know I'm still up! Steve |

Great build Steve. I'm really enjoying it. I like the old WWII stuff too. One of my favorite rockets is still my Estes Maxi-VII sitting right here on my desk.
I can't wait to see how the vacuum form canopy is done. I think there would definitely be interest in a kit version. |

Really quite amazing work. I can't believe how accurately you were able to produce the cones.
