I was working out my plan on packing the chute and shock cord on this one. Had it set up as zipperless, but started to worry about where to put the chute...want it to come out first on ejection but that puts it toward the bottom...the cone would hang lower than the booster...etc etc.
So...changed to good old nose cone ejection...keeping it simple. |

No Joy on the Level 1 flight in Pawhuska OK....
It was a little breezy and I thought I should try the chute release so it wouldn’t drift too far. Loaded it up with AT I161w, checked in an put it on the pad. Flight was great....ejection just after apogee. Cone and booster laid out flat waiting for the chute release......waiting.....uh oh. Smack! The rocket actually didn’t look too bad. I had the walk of shame out to the field to collect it. Chute release did release, but it was all tangled up....shock cord twisted like crazy. I think what happened was the fin can was twisting as it came down. Wrapped it all up. A swivel on the booster end of the cord probably would have prevented it. Not one to give up easy, I’ve rebuilt it and am ready for another attempt. No chute release this time! |

I am against ANY requirements to "certify" to use any hobby rocket motors.
You should be able to walk into any hobby shop, purchase a "M" motor and touch that thing off in your back yard. NOT JOKING. That said, to certify if there must be such a thing, all it should require is getting the rocket back in ANY condition including major busticated.

The drogue prevents the tumbling and provides an orderly descent, and strapping the whole thing to the cord causes it to twist with the cord instead of all in and around it. I still struggle with it though - I burned two motors on Saturday and both times the 'chute opened at apogee despite the shake test and all. It was windy in S. Mo on Saturday, how was it in OK?

Good day today. I’m now NAR level 1. Cert flight went perfect. I couldn’t get the I161 motor, but they had a H130 so I flew my PML Intruder.
Feels great! |
