Default MSL Update

From SFN:
Quote:
1655 GMT (12:55 p.m. EDT)

With about 110,000 miles left to go, Mars Science Lab is a half-day away from landing on the Red Planet. "We are ready to head," says mission manager Brian Portock.

The final opportunity to perform a trajectory course correction was waived off this morning since the vehicle is on the precise track, the spacecraft batteries are fully charged, the backup flight computer has been configured and the Deep Space Network tracking sites have a "full set of bars" in communications with MSL.

Live coverage of landing begins tonight at 11:30 p.m. EDT (0330 GMT). Touchdown is expected at 1:31 a.m. EDT (0531 GMT).

A funny thought just ran through my head. I was just thinking of H.G. Wells book war of the worlds. Couldn't this almost be like that in reverse? Couldn't any Martian life consider this an invasion from earth?

It may be amusing to ponder this: what would our reaction be if beings from another planet sent something like Curiosity here?

If the rover or the expended sky crane should happen to injure someone or damage something, we would probably consider that an unfortunate accident. As great a machine as Curiosity is, it is too dumb to ask, "Take me to your leader," and react to a response. Unless the rover goes crazy and rolls around mowing people down, we may consider it friendly. But I cannot imaging the powers that be willing to let it explore freely either.
