Default Estes Nike Smoke

The Estes web site says the Nike Smoke should be available next week for purchase.

That's great news John.

I am putting it on my post-NARAM-54 kit buying list.

Will you be flying one of these at NARAM?

Mike Fritz, the head of Estes Marketing will be going to this years NARAM event. I'm not sure if he will be bringing anything to fly.

Nice video on the Nike Smoke site. Nice HAVING a Nike Smoke site akin to the USR style for decades now.

I am really glad to see how you did the molding yet still make a rocket capable of "mid-power" which according to the FAA and now the NFPA (finally) includes up to a 240H. That took over a decade too.

In the process of ordering one right now; am hoping to get an extra nose cone for a NARAM project.

The 3" Nike mates up nicely to a BT-60 (Rocketarium) Sandia Tomahawk. Thus, 2 stage Nike-Tomahawk for NARAM in Muskegon! Can't wait!

Please check you scale data. The Nike Tomahawk used the true diamond airfoil section on the Booster while the Nike Smoke used the diamond airfoil with the flat portion between the tapers. If your planning on turing a nosecone into the tranistion piece, you won't have much of the Nike cone left. Good Luck with your project

Thanks for the response, John . You are correct on the tapers; this will be a "sport-scale" model not intended to enter into any scale competitions. Ideally, if I'm able to obtain a second cone, I will be able to fly the Nike as either the single stage Smoke, or the two stage with the simple swap of a nose/transition.

I do have to wonder though; it appears that a few variations of Nike fins were used in the staged versions, regarding both taper and fin attachment method. For example, ROTW shows the Nike-Asp, Nike Cajun, Argo Javelins as having the "diamond-with-flat-portions" style while the Nike-Tomahawks and Nike-Apaches had the "true diamond" airfoils. Thus, I have to believe that the flat section fins were used in several staged Nike flights (though not necessarily Nike-Tomahawk flights). I've also seen different fin attachment methods pictured and portrayed.

Regarding the nosecone/transition...I did similar on a smaller scale Quest T-35 to T-20 version; a Nike Smoke cone was cut off at the top of the large constant diameter section, and a matching balsa reducer added to the top. With the larger 3" to 1.6" version, similar will be done, only the top half will be a paper transition over a long BT-60 coupler reinforced internally to increase stiffness.

I'm thrilled to see Estes offering a 3" Nike Smoke...by the way!!! I'll compliment our 3/4 scale 'Smoke well!
