Space Ship One (or, Der Red One?)
I mentioned before that I have a Space Ship One kit that I was building for rear ejection. Well, I got it to the painting stage, and decided to show it off here before I start in.
Here it is assembled: Here you see how it separates: Here's the inside view of the tailcone: The loop inside the tailcone is a piece of a large paperclip. I cut it off, bent the legs out sideways at 90 degree angles, and then set it into notches I cut in the rear centering ring. I epoxied the engine mount in place, which should hold the loop as well. Jeffyjeep sent me some of his surplus Der Red Max decals, which I will be using (with a red and black color scheme) on this rocket instead of the boring stock paint and decals. I'm leaning toward calling it "Der Red One" but I'm open to suggestions...

How 'bout sanding all leading edges of fins to a rounded shape, hmm ?
Other than that, looking great !

Hah. Hardly ever do that. It's not as if it will make this pig fly any better...

ANY reduction in DRAG makes ALL rockets/aircraft including fat heavy pigs fly better.
The ONLY rockets I ever build that do not get rounded leading edges and sharply tapered trailing edges are ones that are scale builds that require a different profile to be SCALE. It is very simple and takes little extra effort to achieve a much better profile.

You seriously need to chill.

The last person that told me to 'chill' was someone that worked for me that was in training.
The result for me was fine but for THEM it was not....yuk yuk yuk. Anyway, blunt profiled fins to me just show a lack of effort where something simple gets one a large gain.

Not filling ugly spirals on tubes just shows lack of effort. Until you start filling them, you got no ground to stand on.

Since it appears to be a 4" diameter rocket with 24mm mounts, the many new CTI motors seem like good choices to boost it more reasonably. Rounding edges does make a huge difference and that little bit of extra altitude makes the flight more safe. Ejects closer to apogee.

It's about 2" in diameter.

Absolutely correct GH... I'm the same way on my builds... Course, it's Solo's rocket-- if he wants it that way, well, he can do as he likes... Later! OL JR
