Airbrushing?
Does anybody airbrush there rockets? If so what do you use. I found a good deal on a nice hobby size compressor and I'm trying figure out whether to buy it or not. Seems it would beat rattle can painting.

I use an airbrush on over 50% of my builds.
I prefer to paint with Vintage Aero Gloss Dope and for it to look well, it needs to be shot with a spray gun or airbrush. I have a Paasche and a Badger airbrush with a water-trap in the air supply. Not sure of the brand of compressor I have....it is a fairly quiet 2-cylinder that I bought at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon years ago.

I've done some where I needed colors that weren't available locally in rattle cans. I use a Badger and a $39 Harbor Freight pancake compressor. I got two Badgers several years ago when they put on a deeply discounted sale of blemished airbrushes.

Rather than dishing out for an air compressor, I bought a couple of cans of Propel recently. That way if I sucked at it I wouldn't be out that much. Still haven't started the learning curve though. Bought a couple of books and a paint set with airbrush.

I go back and forth with airbrushing. I have a set of Interceptor builds that I am planning to airbrush.
I prefer to use acrylics, like one gets at Michaels. It's water based and cleans well. It also comes in a wide range of colors, metallic, and pearlescent. I have airbrushed with fingernail polish, because it comes in small quantities and a wide range of colors. It's lacquer, so needs a different cleanup. If I want a heavy coat of paint, I'll use rattle cans. But, if I put enough time in the undercoat - primer, etc. - then I like airbrushed acrylics because I think it gives a smoother, more lustrous coat. However, if I want a really glossy finish, I have to depend upon the clearcoat, unlike with rattle cans. |

With two cans of Propel, you're just $10 away from a Harbor Freight pancake compressor. If airbrushing isn't for you, you will still have something to air up your tires without having to fire up the shop compressor.

Airbrushed tee? I figured you'd go for one of the Big Johnson tees.
