3D printed *motor* & kit!
Hello All,
A Brazilian company based in São Paulo, "Edge of Space," has developed an all-3D printed model rocket ("minifoguete"; these pages have a "Translate" button) called "Printed Rocket 01" (PR01, see: http://brazilianspace.blogspot.com/...e-primeiro.html ). They have also made and successfully tested a 3D printed model rocket motor (see: http://brazilianspace.blogspot.com/...ge%20Of%20Space [a video is also on that page]). The motor has a full-scale-type nozzle. They also developed a somewhat larger--but still model-size--rocket called Thor (see: http://brazilianspace.blogspot.com/...ge%20Of%20Space [this article contains several videos]). I hope this material will be interesting.

They didn't provide much info for any of them. It would have been interesting to know what propellant was used in both the 3D and the Thor motor. It was cool how the whole 3D motor glowed when fired, and you could see the thrust vectoring caused by the stuck igniter.

It would be nice if they posted the 3D printer files for the rocket and motor casing as well as the formulation for the fuel grain in the rocket motor. I couldn't find any links to these in the blog.

I can understand why they would share only the barest of details about their 3-D printed motor. It was an early prototype, and they might also have feared that competitors--inside and/or outside of Brazil (such as Argentina, where hobby rocketry is also popular) might quickly bring "knock-off" 3D printed motors to market. Being in a smaller country, being first with a new rocketry product in Brazil might quickly result in capturing the market. Also:
Another possibility--since the 3D printed rocket motor's creators are all professional engineers--is that they are working on this concept for indigenous sounding rockets, ballistic missiles, and/or satellite launch vehicles, all of which the Brazilian aerospace industry, armed forces, and space agency have been and are working on (the "Edge of Space" group is developing sounding rockets and a microsat launch vehicle, see: http://brazilianspace.blogspot.com/...ge%20Of%20Space ). Had Brazil's VLS launch vehicle not suffered its tragic launch pad explosion and fire (which killed and injured several people) a few years ago, Brazil might--as India is now--be launching its own satellites, and other nations' satellites, inexpensively (they are currently developing a new launch vehicle, the VLM [see: http://www.dlr.de/dlr/en/desktopdef.../#/gallery/6932 and http://brazilianspace.blogspot.com/...mock-up-do.html ), and: The 3D printed rocket motor (I enjoyed its internally self-luminous characteristic, too!) looks like something that could--in a developed form--serve as a spin motor, which could reduce the impact dispersion of sounding rockets. (Since one of Brazil's major customers for their sounding rockets [their VSB-30 in particular http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VSB-30 and https://space.skyrocket.de/doc_lau_fam/s-30.htm , which replaced the British Skylark] is Sweden, whose Esrange Space Center has a small impact zone, minimizing the VSB-30's dispersion was an important design feature [the Skylarks launched from Esrange used Imp spin motors to reduce dispersion].) Indigenously-developed spin motors would also be useful for spin-stabilizing ballistic missile re-entry vehicles and the final, solid propellant upper stages of satellite launch vehicles. (Brazil has flight-tested a few liquid propellant test rockets, but they have a preference for solid propellant rockets.)

Very interesting work by the Brazilians. I can see both good and bad coming out of this. It should work just fine when tested and operated by professionals, but when Joe-Six-Pack gets his hands on it here in the U.S. (and makes up his own propellant system), I can only dread the horrible things that will be posted on youtube.....

On the good side, I can see this being a boon for hybrid rockets. It would be safe for people to 3D print fuel grains (tested and proven ones, of course, whose files were made available) out of the standard printing plastics, and use them in motor cases with nozzles--perhaps also 3D printed--of proven design. The oxidizer could be in those nitrous oxide cartridge bulbs that are used for making whipped cream (the ones that look like the CO2 cartridge bulbs; *here* http://www.google.com/search?source...i30.5y8wkvMtFWA are examples of such small hybrid rockets). For flying models, the nitrous oxide cartridge could be housed inside a sheet foam rubber-lined section of kraft paper body tube.

I'm one that will LIKE seeing how "Joe Six-Pak" uses this motor technology.
Keep it "Wild West" UN-REG-YOO-LAY-TIDD also.
