Model Rocket News Vol 10 Number 3 August 1970
Here is MRN Vol 10 Number 3 from August 1970 thanks to Don Altschwager.
Don sent this a couple years ago but the link was tucked away in a post in the Wanted forum. I'm reposting it here so it's easier to find. http://www.oldrocketplans.com/mrn/m.../mrn_v10_n3.pdf

You should thank Don. It's been online here for almost two years, but it was in a Poll you created in the Wanted section: http://www.oldrocketforum.com/showthread.php?t=16535

The plan IS a good one and calls the model the PROPER name, BAKA, which means "Idiot" in Japanese.
Should be rigged to break up upon end of flight like the full-scale design. Recovery at the site of TARGET RAMMING.

forgive me....I've been away for awhile so I'm going through some f the old posts.....
Baka might make an excellent model for spot landing competition (assuming they still have those..... )

Interesting comparing the picture of Dane Boles at the top of page 9 in that MRN to the one of him posted the other day on that other forum: https://www.rocketryforum.com/threa...57/post-2122428
But then, I've aged a bit since 1970 myself....

Dane must enjoy his work pretty well: 73 and still going at it! Yeah, I would suspect even he would have a comment about just how long ago the former photo is. I wonder why that particular issue of Model Rocket News is so hard to find. I don’t think I have ever seen an actual copy of it ever and I don’t ever recall seeing it come up on eBay like so many of the various other issues do. Or...was that issue given out JUST at NARAM-12 possibly? Anyone know? Earl

I believe it was just that: A NARAM 12 exclusive.

Ted Nomura's Kamikaze Baka looks like it was based on the Japanese Ohka flying rocket bomb.
IIRC there was a jet powered version as well. I did a version but used traditional nose blow rather than rear eject. Also had problems with the clear canopy so subbed cardstock.

I forget who sent me a copy of that issue (I would really like to thank him again) and he said that was only handed out at the NARAM. I think he said it is the rarest of all the MRN issues. I had never heard of it before either. |
