I like your idea of using basswood for fins. I also like the idea of getting the kit, since it has laser cut fins. I hand cut all the wood parts for my Super Orbital Transport from basswood. That was over 10 years ago, and I still shudder at the thought. Maybe a compromise might be to paper the kit fins ... but no reason to worry about it now. I cannot work on any project of substance until my Saturns are complete for next July’s anniversary launches.

My Farside clone has basswood fins.
If I had to do it again, I would have made them through-the-wall. There is an issue where . . . hmm, how can I put this? The fins are comparatively huge, and thus there's potentially a lot of torque put on the fin/tube joint. Because basswood is less porous compared to balsa, glue joints don't have as much grip. So they can snap off easily. Even a small TTW tab could add a lot of strength to the joint. Of course, this is a problem if you have a 24mm motor in the first stage.

I’ve had pretty good luck surface mounting basswood fins, but here is an idea for use on the 24mm powered booster on the Farside-X. These pictures are from a post by Gary Rosenfield, showing a neat method he used to enhanced the surface mounting of fins for a minimum diameter rocket.
As I recall, a piece of masking tape was applied inside the tube to prevent leakages of epoxy, then removed once it started to set up.

That's a really interesting technique! Thanks!

No problem! After posting the pictures, I’m thinking I’ll start a build of the booster using this technique with basswood fins, and then decide if maybe I’ll just get the Semroc kit for the rest of the build.

I flew my Farside clone maybe three times:
Successful flight at Roberson Park (?) in Livermore. B14-0 / A8-0 / A8-5 Staging failure, don't remember the motor combo, Sheridan OR. Third stage badly mashed. Last year in Sheridan, with patched-up third stage, C6-0 / C6-0 / C6-7: AWESOME. Straight boost, awesome altitude. Someone had to find the third stage for me. * * * I have a Comanche III unbuilt. I think I'll use Lee's technique to sturdy it up, lengthen the first stage so it can take an E12-0, and fly it next year.

Seriously, I'd do something like a C11-0 to A8-0 (or A10-0T) to A8-5 on the first flight. Try to get it all back at least once Then go for the full stack later. Doug .

I have a few but I don't know their history. I think some came from a garage sale so I guess mine are just "collectibles".
