NEW F9 descent views!
Hello All,
Thanks to an NRO security restriction, new and spectacular--some almost frighteningly so!--views of Monday's Falcon 9/NROL-76 launch and Stage 1 re-entry & landing were webcasted by SpaceX. The video coverage of Monday’s Falcon 9 launch and first stage landing at Cape Canaveral includes external camera views of the staging, the Stage 1 boost-back and re-entry engine burns, and its landing that have never been broadcast before (the links are below). This was done because the NRO (National Reconnaissance Office) requested that SpaceX *not* (as they normally do) show onboard video of/from the Falcon 9’s second stage, so that the exact orbit of its classified payload—the NROL-76 spy satellite—which is speculated to be a radar imaging satellite rather than a camera-equipped one, would be more difficult to determine (knowing its orbit parameters would give clues about its nature), and: The first stage coasted to a peak altitude of more than 100 miles (about 166 km) before returning to land at the Cape, and apparently one payload fairing half was also recovered from the Atlantic (SpaceX is working on recovering the payload fairings on a floating “bouncy castle” platform, so that—like the first stages of the rockets—they too can be reused). Events seen in the onboard views are slightly later than the external-camera ones, probably due to buffering of the downlinked video signal from the rocket. That was some nice camera work tracking it all the way through separation and return.

During the coasting portion of the return, one or more engines are continuously venting what looks like LOX vapor (maybe to keep the to-be-used engines chilled down to start temperature?). And that extreme close-up of the falling and vapor-venting (and then firing) first stage is almost scary (I'm sure it was taken through a telephoto lens); it looks like it's going to hit the camera (like the falling, spinning, burning Atlas sustainer engine and rear airframe cone from the exploded first Atlas-Centaur test vehicle [staring at 1:08 *here* www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEHO7YIpu-I ], which came just as "close" to the camera)!

Wow! That was extremely cool, blackshire! Really enjoyed that! Great footage and PERFECT pairing of music to go with it... Best I've seen since "Trinity an Beyond-the atomic bomb movie"
So many people put stupid music in their videos (and movies nowadays) that totally doesn't match the dynamic or grandeur of the visuals... Good music choice can give you shivers when it's done right... And this was... It makes mediocre into something great... Like the music in "Mission to Mars" made that movie... Later! OL J R

The score to "Koyaanisqatsi" (the film this is excerpted from) is by Philip Glass ("Einstein On The Beach", "Glassworks", "Songs From Liquid Days"). The name is from a Hopi word meaning "life out of balance" , which I have been all too familiar with lately, though hopefully that is now past! https://www.koyaanisqatsi.org/films/koyaanisqatsi.php

The music from the sequel, Powaqatsi, has been used in several films. This piece from it is a favorite:

Interesting. Of all his pieces, this is my *least* favorite by far.
