Hi all,

I have an Estes Mercury Atlas that I use to fly on the "D" series motor. I haven't flow it for at least 10 years now. My question is since Estes has come out with "E" series black powder motors. Is there an "E" size that would fit the Mercury Atlas engine hook? This kit came with an orange spacer to fit the "D" series. Is there a new "E" series that would do a better job putting this thing in the air?

It sounds like the Atlas was set up to take the old Estes E15, which was cato-prone.

The new E9 and E12 motors have a slightly different length than the E15.

You might need to bend and reshape the hook with a couple of needle-nose pliers.

Of the two, I'd go with the E12. Higher thrust, so it would get the fairly bulky Atlas moving at a safe and stable velocity.

Ditto. The current "E" engines are .25" longer than the old E15 engines were. If you happen to have an old E15 engine, please don't use it in your Atlas---unless a CATO is what your goal actually is.

Use an Aerotech Composite E motor. They are Estes D 'length' but are a full 40n-sec.
I would use the E15 in single use or E18 in 24mm RMS. The E30/E28 may have a bit too much kick.
The F24 RMS 24 reload works great too as it does in the Semroc Estes clone of the K29 Saturn 1B and all Estes Saturn V's.
The Mercury Atlas does not fly for beans on a D12, and barely decently on the E9/E12.

Thanks everyone.. I have not flown in such a long time I've forgotten too much. I do have and 24mm Aerotech RMS that I use to fly my Saturn V & Ib with. I would use an E15-4. I like just flying with BP motors .... less work.

You can get 3-paks of Aerotech Single Use E15-4's from Valuerockets.com for like $20+ shipping.
Just as easy as BP SU, and you get a full 40n-sec instead of around 28n-sec of the Estes E12-4
