Default Estes #2037 D-region Tomahawk

Just wanted to put in a good word for this kit. Thank you, Estes! Beautifully formed plastic parts (including fins) with very nice detail. Parts were formed to tight specs and everything fits perfectly. Heavy wall tubes. Plastic engine retainer at bottom instead of an engine hook. And because the bottom section of the rocket is also plastic, fin attachment is very easy and alignment is perfect. The only knock against the rocket is its weight. This thing is heavy. Prepaint weight is 9.5 ounces. Takes D or E 24 mm engines. It may not be a top performer due to the weight, but it's sure gonna look good on the way up! I got this kit last year at about this time when Estes had their sale on for I believe around 5 bucks! After working on the kit last night I can give it a hearty two thumbs up!

Regarding plastic parts in Estes kits -
I just finished the middle sized Estes R2D2 for the blog.
I think I'm just as surprised by the fit of the plastic parts.
They went together better than any of the plastic kits I built years ago.
Maybe the same mold maker worked on both kits?

After reading your post, I may have to get a D-Region Tomahawk.

And I forgot to mention the impressive size................38.8" long. Plus a nice quality woven parachute! It just keeps getting better and better............

Can this kit be easily modified for 29mm BP motors?

If so, Estes should consider a new release.

It would be tricky. The fin tabs would have to be trimmed back, and the motor mount / "can" entirely redesigned.

Rather than a 29mm release of the DRT, I'd like to see Estes release more scale sounding rockets using the same materials / techniques. Like a Black Brant or Arcas.

The tabs don't go through all the way to the motor mount, they just are cemented into the slots and don't go much further than that. From the thread I looked at it appears there's clearance for 29 mm.

One final comment on this great kit..............the parachute is a pre-assembled (sewn) heavy duty fabric type. There is certainly a lot of value in this kit! I can't believe Estes made much money on these even at original retail pricing. I would recommend this kit to anyone as a best buy.
