I long for the good old days when just about all rattle can paint was lacquer and a kid had to work hard to screw up a paint job! |

I saw little cans of "LACQUER" spray paint at LHS -- the big bold letters caught my attention. I was in a bit of a hurry, and so I do not recall if it was Testors or another brand, but I'm going to get a couple and try them out. Unfortunately, all the little rattle cans are very pricey.

Testors still sells lacquer paints. My favorite (and Intruder's too) red is the Model Masters series Italian Red, which is fast drying, great smelling, can't screw it up lacquer. But it's about $5 a can. |

To this day I still don't use any type of top coat. I like the natural look of a smooth glossy paint job and smooth decals. Now if I had to paint a rocket flat, that would be a different story since decals silver badly over flat paint. |

Got hit , bad
Latest project - soon to be posted- terrible crinkle with Krylon new formula. Problem is , I am not sure of the culprit. it went crazy over fill'n'finish, and CA reinforced edging. It had Rustoleum primer, but not my usual automotive grey. I sanded down affected areas and shot with rustoleum white. Seemed to settle well. I think I will be going back to lacquer as well. So little problem and not expensive considering one coat of lacquer = multiple coats of krylon/sand/fix/sand/krylon/clearcoat.

Well I tested and sprayed Tamiya clear over the Semroc Ruskie and it came out great. Did two light coats and one heavy coat 15 minutes apart from each other. Thanks for all your input guys its great to have place with willing people to help you through. By the way, who do you guys use for picture hosting?? Thought i would post pictures of my fleet so far. 1) The Launch pads Pershing 2, 2) Estes Der Red Max, 3) Semroc Ruskie-just needs to dry and attach the parachute, and 4) painted but not decaled -Semroc Saki.

Dittos to barone's post. Photobucket is a great service. You can create directories, and uploading your pictures is easy. To post a link, you highlight your picture(s), click on "Generate HTML and IMG code", and it creates the code to copy into your post, which shows a thumbnail, and links to the bigger image on Photobucket:

Can you use paint stripper?
While finishing off my latest build (the twins, Spacemaster and Sat Interceptor), I noticed some thin spots on the finish of the Spacemaster. I mistakingly grabbed the Kilz gloss and gave a spray over. Of course, it was the other rocket was done in Kilz over Kilz primer. This one had been finished with rustoleum gloss.
Now I have one beauty and one beast. The finish looks like a dried lake bed. I have gone the route of sanding out a mistake of incompatibility like this in the past, but has anyone ever fully stripped a paint job? I was wondering about products like JASCO or those citrus strippers. They are fast, but at what cost? |
