Though I've been building and collecting Estes kits since 1970,I've never known-what's the difference between the original Apogee and the Apogee II?

The II is about 2.55" longer. If you look at catalog photos, the booster seems to be where most of that extra length is located.

Here's a comparison I did using a graphics editor to estimate the Apogee-1 dimensions. The Apogee-2 booster is almost an inch longer, and the sustainer is longer as well.

Yes it was stretched:

Apogee I - 12.2 inches in length
Apogee II - 14.75 inches in length

It was done to compensate for stability issues.
