Default Moth

While wating for fillets to dry on my FSI Viking IV build, I threw together some spare parts that I'm calling 'Moth'. It's based on a kit Steve Naquin built called 'Shadow Aero' - he'll have to fill you all in on whose kit it is as I've lost his original e-mail, but it's a nice looking rocket. I think it's a min diameter for 38mm motors. Any way, I used BMS's foil lined HD 1.0" tube (for 24mm motors) and after building (of course) tried to fit a Estes E9 motor and found it to be and extemely tight - I mean *TIGHT* - fit. I'll probably have to sand out the tube, which sort of defeats the purpose of the foil lining. Same result with Estes D12 and C11's. The same motors in the standard HD tubing for 24mm motors fit snugly, but they fit. Has anyone else had this problem with the foil lined tubes?
*Note: The 24/40 reloadable casing fits just fine.

Sand the motor, save the foil I betcha the next pack won't be so tight.

My experience is that the motors sometimes tend to swell due to the ramming during assembly, which manifests itself in the lower ~1/2 of the motor being fat.

That's what I thought initially, but I've tried just about every 24mm motor I've got, and none of them will go in past the half-way point, and even that's a struggle.

Okay, so much for that theory Multiple, different motors definitely sounds like the tube.

So, how 'bout this theory? I used to get carried away with glue fillets on the centering rings with the result, when the yellow glue dried and shrank, there was a tight spot in the motor tube. Could that maybe be a factor?

(in a very bad "Carnac" voice): Wrong again, wood-glue breath!
No motor mount, and I didn't install a motor block.

I have sometimes had tight motor tubes "stretch" and get less snug after a couple of flights. Maybe the heat from the motor casing caused them to "relax" a little. I'm not sure how this helps if you cannot get a motor into it even once, though.

Can it fly on Quest D5s?

Yes, specifically the BMS ones. I too just sand down the motor a bit and it seems to work fine.

FWIW, I used epoxy to glue in a thrust ring.

It should be able to fly on the D5's (any word on when the D8's are due out?) tho I'd use a 4 - 5 ft. launch rod to get it going in the right direction. And as I mentioned, the 24/40 casing fits just fine. It's just that I built it with the E9 motor in mind.

The kit you mentioned was a ShadowAero BlackBird min diameter for 29mm motors. Any more progress with your Moth build?

I purchased BMS 24mm and 29mm foil lined tubing to use for motor mounts but haven't tried any yet. I bought some when they released the BB clone of the month design a while back.
