Vintage Estes Astron Sprint Build
This is an older kit and I am surprised I have not build one yet. All the parts and decals look great but will use a new piece of rubber shock cord from Estes.

The Sprint is so easy to clone I am surprised you are building an original.
BTW, it is my favorite rocket.

I have so many vintage kits to build so cloning is not really an option. If I don't build these kits I feel it would just be a waste.

This was a straight forward build and went together pretty fast. I will begin the balsa sealing tomorrow.

So...did you taper the fins thickness from tip to root? That is one of the coolest features of this design.

Well, it is my favorite design. Whether or not it is an aerodynamically superior design is kind of meaningless to me. It's just a cool design. The tail cone (boat tail...whatever) the elliptical fins that is reminiscent of the Supermarine Spitfire from WW II all just add up to just a cool shape. They are an efficient design. Heck I've probably lost 5 or 6 of them.

Sandman, I looked pretty hard at the Estes Pictures and what I could see they used regular rounded tips and normal fillets not the larger fillets shown on the plan. It is a cool looking bird, can't wait to paint her.

Origin of the Estes Sprint
Mike Dorffler is given credit for designing the Estes Sprint that was first issued in 1970. If you have access to the Estes publication TR-11 Aerodynamic Drag of Model Rockets by Dr. Gerald M. Gregorek you can see its derivation. Dr. G had members of the Columbus Society for Advancement of Rocketry (CSAR) build a several different versions of the original Estes Alpha with each group of two or three incorporating drag reducing improvements discussed in TR-11. The last two were refered to as the "uprated" Alpha and had trapazoid fins, boat-tail, and a parabolic nose cone. The Uprated showed an improvement in tracked altitude compared to the original Alpha. Funny, it looks like a Sprint. I was not part of the project as I had gone off to Cleveland to school before returning to The Ohio State University.
Dorffler may have improved on the Uprated Alpha design to make it kitable, but the groundwork was TR-11. I have never actually built an Estes Sprint, but do have one of the Super Sprint kits. Chas
