Estes Ram-Jet (#1994)
These shots are from last August. I recently got up the nerve to Dope the 54 Internal fins of the 3 Models, and I moved forward.

Ram-Jet Triplets, Ho!
Continued with 2X White Primer, added 2X Gloss Winter Gray on 2, and one got shot with 2X Metallic Aluminium. Tubes sprayed with 2X Real Orange.
Chris M., if you're lookin' in, check the Waist of the X-30s Rear Bulkhead. What kinda Nincompoop am I? I bet if I'd built that rocket after reading your Blog, I'da sanded a proper profile and set it in gently with a low-moisture glue. Last edited by Overeasy123 : 07-04-2016 at 01:13 AM. |

Ram-Jet Triplets, Ho!
Body Tubes still floatin'. I've gotta add Engine Hooks, Detail Stripes, and a Black Wash to the Internal Strakes. I'll profer my preference of the Opaque Gray to the Metallic Color. Dude, Man, I like the shape of these Fins, and the Internal Details showing through, Fore & Aft. TBC

Hi Overeasy, I'm lookin' in today! Your X-30 looks good to me! There's always a slight bulge where those bulkheads push out against the shroud. (You should have seen the first few I put together over the years.) The big problem with the X-30s is trying to get the parachutes to eject out of the small diameter interior tube. Use some talcum powder. The Ramjets look great! I always liked that design.

Thanks, Sandman, John, and Chris.
And thank you for offering, Sandman. I've been sitting on 3 Sets of your Ram Jet Decals for a while, now. I'm looking forward to the process, as I know they'll go on as smoothly and as paint-like as the Skybolt Decal I've used. I have to Dig Around a bit, but I sure hope I got USS Atlantis decals while available. Last edited by Overeasy123 : 07-04-2016 at 01:21 PM. |

Hello, Dlazarus6660, thank you for your inquiry.
Tite Bond Moulding and Trim Glue (TBMTG) is the Key, but first I Mask with BMT (Blue Masking Tape) broken down with a Straight Edge (for a Clean Edge and Economy.) I mask along mostly-arbitrary lines (I cut a Jig from Chip Board) sketched parallel to the Root Edge (on the BT and the Fin itself,) and finish the Masking with Perpendiculars at the Leading and Trailing Edges of each Fin. After Masking, it's easy to lay-in the TBMTG with a Popsicle Stick! The Glue trails off onto the BMT, fore and aft, and the Stick can be used to sculpt where it's not keeping a steady radius in contact with both BT and Fin. Because the TBMTG is so perfectly-viscous you can almost immediately remove the BMT and set the Rocket aside to dry. I do Fillets mostly 2 at a time, that's why it's so easy to build the same models in multiples, Assembly-Line Fashion. After sanding (SandPaper wrapped around the Eraser of a Fresh Ticonderoga Pencil and a Finger) coats of Filler Primer, Primer, and Color Coats, the effect is a bit Chunky, but Solid. I like to think it's Architectural, while still affording Traces of the Hand of the F'Artiste! |
