Default Estes S.W.A.T. #2017

Much thanks to Gus for making this build possible! I bought this kit from him a short time ago for a very reasonable price. He shipped it Semroc-fast and it arrived beautifully packed and in mint/factory sealed condition. The S.W.A.T. has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid even though I never actually had one. I love the design and I think this is a great kit. I couldn't wait to start building so I forgot to take a pic of the parts layout. But I had fun taking some photos so here is how she looks so far.

Are you doing yours as a SWAT? (Paint and decals, I mean.) If so, consider doing a review for EMRR. I don't think this one has been tackled yet.

Yes, she will be a S.W.A.T. Bill. How is your S.W.A.T., I mean clustered Satellite Interceptor coming along?

The parts in this kit are really nice. The grade of balsa isn't as good as what Estes is currently using but, the fins and wings were nicely die cut instead of die crushed and warp free. The decals look great and have not yellowed. The shock cord is 1/8" wide and about 15.25" long, way to short in my opinion. If I had built this rocket back in the day, I would have just used the tri-fold mount, install per instructions and then go fly it.

Finished except for paint and decals, but they should be done by the next (scheduled) launch.

Here she is in white primer. This is the first time I've used Elmer's Carpenter's Wood Filler on a model rocket and I really like it! It was used on the fins/wings, rudder/stabs and spiral groves on the body tube. It dries really fast and sands easily and smoothly. For adhesive I used regular Elmer's Glue All through out the entire build including the motor mount and fillets.

I have one of these kits in the bag that I got on the cheap on eBay. I then turned around and purchased the BT60 conical nosecone from QModeling and a set of 167% upscaled decals for the Satellite Interceptor from Excelsior (the SWAT is basically a BT60 upscaled Satellite Interceptor with a different nose cone and suggested finishing scheme)

My intent is to build it as an upscaled S.I. with a 3.75" long 24mm "E" mount. The other minor mod that I will probably do is extend the motor tube as a "stuffer."

Once I unpack my rockets from the recent move, that's a project I'd like to get on.....

I went with a kind of "splinter" camo pattern and I think I like it. The white primer coat was done with an airbrush but the tan base coat and camo job was done with straight up regular paint brushes and alot of masking tape. Some touch up painting is in order as are a couple of coats of Future before the decals go on.

Looks great, I like the paint scheme you picked.

I have one of these lying built but unpainted on the table. I think I'm going to go with a gray and black scheme for mine.
