Default Sun Dog?

I was heading to a job northwest of Wausau, WI early this morning (I get around), and I shot this photo before the sun had broken the horizon.

I think the "shaft" could be a sun dog. I've seen a few sun dogs before but never one this early in the day. Any ideas?

Never heard of a 'Sun Dog'. Is it anything like a 'Hot Dog?'

That's a sun pillar. Sun dogs are to the left and right of the sun at a certain angle.

Interesting. I've never heard of a Sun Pillar. Is it also caused by refraction through ice crystals like a Sun Dog?

Sun dogs are to the left and right of the sun at a certain angle.

....and that angle is 22 degrees from the sun.
