Nice pictures, but they all show the MGR-1A (M-31) version of the Honest John, not the MGR-1B (M-50) version. The spin rockets on the M-50 were recessed and the fins were smaller on that version.

Jeff,

The MGR-1A and MGR-1B both used frangible caps on the individual spin motors. The pedestal came out of the crate with a plastic wrap but no additional cover in the spin motor recess. The MGR-1B (M50) as released under Estes 1919 is relatively accurate in terms of the overall configuration, about the only specific I recall is that the NC is placed (decaled) with the spin motors aligned with the launch shoes.

This link will take you to the TM searching for Spin Motors. Within the document there are also some great pictures of the placement of the data stencils on the warhead. Also that the spin motors were ignited by a simple shear pin switch as the rocket travelled down the rail.

Thanks John. Last night I did a (possibly non-scale) thing to the spin nozzles:

The molded recesses of the Sirius NC were rather rough and nozzle details themselves were actually blown through to the inside of the NC, so used a sanding needle to make all (4) nozzles the same. I then used the .090" die on a leather punch to make (4) tiny disks from fiber stock which I epoxied in place. Once it's all primered, painted, and detailed it might not look too bad.

One last thing:

Except for the submarine launched encapsulated harpoon, I know next to zilch about guided missiles.
For what purpose was the warhead of the real HoJo made to spin?

Both versions of the Honest John were unguided rockets. The spin motos were ignited as the rocket left the launcher to spin-stabilize the vehicle. The spin motors were in the warhead shroud simply as the large solid motor took up most of the vehicle. The actual warhead , especially the nuclear warhead, only took up part of the warhead section, along with associated safe/arming systems.

Ah, so. So the spinning acted sorta-kinda like a gyroscope? Very interesting!

So then the HoJo was indeed a ballistic rocket and NOT a missile(?). I guess it depends on definitions.

Remember, the post 1962 designation of the Honest John was MGR-1. The R meant that the rocket did not have an active guidance system. Other ordnance that were umguided were the AIR-2 Genie and the MGR-3 Little John.
