Default Foam Shuttle Repair

I'll keep this short:

I got my hands on one of the old Estes foam Space Shuttles that came only in a launch set (EST1467). It looks neat and with a little work could be returned to flight as a piggyback on a larger rocket. Unfortunately, the tail has broken off. The instruction say repeatedly not to repair it with epoxy. OK, I'll bite, what exactly do I repair it with?

Do they say not to use epoxy because then I will become as powerful as THEY are?

And can I paint it? The instructions say Testors but I've seen Testors eat through foam.

And some replacement stickers?

Anybody tackled this one before?

I can't help you with the type of glue to use, but someone on this forum will know the answer. As to paint, water-based paint should not affect the styrofoam. Testors make Acryl, water-based paint.

Try this
http://www.rcfoam.com/product_info.php?products_id=1243

And acrylic paint works well on foam.

I used epoxy for my F-22 Fighter, but if they say not to, they say not to.
Not sure why that link didn't work.......

Bill,

There are special characters in the link that need the hexabit translation to work:

I've used white glue to fix rigid styrofoam in the past. It worked satisfactorily.

"Country Colors" makes acrylic spray paints that should work with foam. You'll want to avoid enamels and lacquers, as they'll attack and melt the foam.

Testors ENAMEL will absolutely NOT melt foam. Their Lacquers will every time.

As far as glue, use contact cement that is typical for sheeting R/C foam wing cores. You brush it on each part then wait for it to dry, then you press the parts together. You could use foam-safe cyanoacrylate, but NOT 'regular' CA also.

White Glue SUCKS, period. Don't use it.

Thanks guys,

I ordered the glue SecretSquirrel suggested on Tuesday morning and it got here today via regular USPS. Its a mighty big bottle for such a small repair, but I had been thinking about a foam R/C slope soarer (like an F-80) so I could justify the purchase.

I did try some Testors Acryl black paint in a secluded spot and it did not melt the foam, so I'm going to have a go at it. I'm not going to go nuts, 'cause its been launched a few times and is not exactly pristine.

It'll be fun while I'm waiting for stuff to dry on my Shenzhou.

Here's what I'm starting with:
