Default 18mm x 4 cluster in an SV #2157

A friend of mine asked me to install a 18mm x 4 cluster mount into a "for flying only" (IOW it looks like poo) Estes Saturn V #2157 that's already built.

I'll use a Semroc 1B mount and stuffer tube to do it, but my question is: how far up should it be mounted? He doesn't care if the faux display nozzles can be put in or not after the cluster mount job is done.

Thanks!

It better be up at least as high as the 24mm mount. They used to fly fine with the 3x18mm mount from the factory, but don't know if the extra 18mm will throw stability off. I suspect it would NOT. Why anyone would go to that level of complexity instead of a single 29mm makes ZERO sense in my book. A single 24mm E28/E30 or E15/E18 has more total impulse than 4xC6-3 and is cheaper to launch with RMS. A F24 is even better.

Because clusters are FUN. The satisfaction of all 4 igniting is incredible, and the excitement when 3 out of 4 ignite is thrilling. The laughter when only 1 ignites is invigorating, and the horror when only 2 ignite is bone chilling, especially when they are next to each other.

A 4x cluster does look cool during take off!

Going with 4 18mm, I suggest C 6-3's and a 4' rod.

I assure you, nothing would please me more than putting in a single 29mm mount! To do this engine mount job, my friend is paying me with (3) kits: Estes Pro Series Impulse, Pro Series Maxi Force, and a Pro Series Patriot Missile. So if he wants a 4x18mm mount--I'll do a 4x18mm mount!

For that, I'd put in a single 18mm mount if that's what he wanted!

Thanks for the 1B photos. Do you know if there's any reason I can't use the same shallow insertion point for the 4x18mm mount into the SV as the 1B? I realize the 1B has about 10 times the fin surface area as the SV.

The old Estes K-36 Saturn V had the motor mount at the rear of the BT-101, but you needed to use slip-on clear plastic fins for proper stability. The nicest thing about that version of the Saturn V was the interchangeable motor mounts.
