Or you can use a simulation of Brilliant Pebbles: a shotgun...

Cheers,

This is a good point - but these guys in the alternate universe aren't scared of each other. On the other hand, any object that could exceed the speed of light would make a very efficient ballistic weapon, even a 'planet killer', if you will. That could win... maybe.

On a side note (this reminds me): Any aficionados of good, and I mean good 'space opera'? Read the 'Honor Harrington' series by David Weber. 'Nuff said.

As for launching old ICBM's from their silos at the "enemy" country with ball bearings to create meteor displays, that would create more fireworks than one would probably want... IE a full retaliatory strike, as the enemies defenses would detect it as a full scale attack! Plus, even if it was all pre-arranged to prevent accidentally triggering Armageddon, there's still the issue of all the spent missile stages crashing into the areas north of the missile silos on their trajectories... sorta like when I went to the Minuteman silo they converted into a museum in South Dakota... they pulled the 70-odd ton concrete silo door back into "maintenance position" and installed a glass cover over the silo in its place... you can lean over it and put your face on the glass and the missile RV is about 3-4 feet below the glass, and see all the way to the bottom of the silo. The retired missile launch guy who was leading the tour told about what would happen at launch-- the door was pushed off the silo by rocket motors-- it'd slide along short tracks, but the rocket motors were powerful enough that they basically THREW the door about 70-100 yards, which would put it right through the security storm fence... someone asked what would happen if someone were outside the fence and got hit by it... "Well, they'd die 30 minutes before everbody else, because once these things are launched, that's it... the balloon has gone up and there's no stopping it... it's all over!" I'm sure the North Dakotans and Montana folks, along with the Canadians, would have been thrilled to have spent ICBM first stages raining down on their houses and backyards... course they wouldn't have but a matter of minutes to be upset about it before the Russian fireworks arrived... Course back in the day, with the Titan II's stationed at Little Rock, Wichita, and Pima, those first stages and rocket engines raining down in the countryside and in places like St. Louis, Flagstaff, Des Moines, and Chicago, would probably have PO'd a few people... course like I said, in about 20 minutes after they crashed it wouldn't really matter much...

Later! OL JR
That fits in with what Dale Brown (novelist and former SAC B-52 pilot) said to Art Bell after he explained that their safety distances (as given in their briefings) from their bombs' detonation points was about 10 miles and Art asked, "Wasn't that kind of close?" Dale Brown replied, "Well, they were secure in the knowledge that if they were wrong, they didn't have to worry about us coming back to complain about it." When it's TEOTWAWKI, what's a few mis-impacted ICBM lower stages in our (or our neighbors') back yards? :-)
