That is a really awesome rocket. Now I really can't wait.
Yes, aerodynamics is aerodynamics. I never thought about it that way, that you can launch them alot more, which is true. Rocketry is an art either way right, large or small. |

Thanks guys. Of course, using that much titanium in the fuel lowers the ISP of the motor, but the effect was definately worth it.

Ah, so you added that for color, how do you tell how much to add?

Not for color...for the huge sparks. You can get different flame colors by adding various salts (such as a strontium salt for red), the same basic way fireworks are colored. Once you get good at making a reliable standard motor, then you can worry about colors. BTW, that's an AP based motor. You can't do that with the candy propellant.. |

The Aerobee Hi and its siblings in the 150 family are becoming a favorite of mine, I have to admit. Do you still have it? Was this your own design, or did someone release this monster in kit form back then? Beautiful shot, BTW...

I still have it, but the lower section was damaged the last time I flew it due to a parachute malfunction. I never got around to repairing it because I quit flying HPR. The photo is from its maiden flight at LDRS and it was a complete success. I built it 100% from scratch, including laying up the nosecone. The only thing I didn't do was roll my own tubes and grow the trees for the fins and rings. Here's another shot of it at the same field a year or three later. |
