Oh, this is sad. Darrell lived here in Georgia when I first met him in the early 90s or so and we attended a number of the same launches, inluding a number of the same LDRS events over the years.

Darrell was a fine gentleman, the kind of person we need more of. It's really hard to let ones like this go, but Heaven will be all the richer with Darrell there.

I know he had some level of health concerns, but I was not aware of anything that was of an acutely serious nature, so this is indeed a huge shock.

I believe too that Darrell was like many of us in that he cared for an ailing parent (mother), so I'm sure prayers for her continued care and well being would certainly be Darrell's wish.

Spread your wings my friend...one day we will meet again.

Earl

Darrell and I were in touch by email for the past couple of months. He had his hands full helping his mother with her medical treatments and was stressed about that and money.

Darrel formed Rocketry Online as well was active in local clubs. ROL became the defacto place for all connected members of the rocketry community to share ideas, news, gripes and political goings ons.

The one scoop of note on ROL Chat was when the BATFE had a "secret test" of Aerotech reloadable J350's to try to show they had the capability of being an effective RPG. The agents assembled one wrong and it popped inside a van load of agents causing them to scurry about and abandon the trials. That was declared YA Keystone Cops moment by the folks chatting about it, based on direct information from an "in the loop source", who just happened both see the video and to enjoy ROL Chat.

ROL and RP had the benefit of input and participation by all the luminaries of model, HPR, and amateur rocketry. It was a timely and welcoming, albiet occasionally noisy and contentious place.

Darrell made it possible to air those issues and bring many folks together from all around the country and indeed the world. For decades . . .

That is his legacy. That is what I will remember most.

Jerry Irvine

Darrell in his own words:

6-27-11

Right now it is very low on my priority list simply because I have so much
personal stuff going on in my life. As you know, I didn't call Friday, so
sh*t was happening. My mother just had the balance of her 39 staples
removed from her head Thursday and she was at the ER this morning. We have
to begin radiation for the melanoma. Most people can't begin to understand
what I am dealing with, which is why I didn't touch the computer from Friday
afternoon until this afternoon.

I will have one day, but I can't say when. An NSL article and photo array
would be nice, but I can't promise when I'd get it up. I am trying to prod
an assistant into being more proactive in learning the RP Style of creating
and posting articles, as he gets copies on submissions sent to
articles@rocketryplanet.com, but he doesn't feel he can measure up (he's
young) so he's a little scared to try.

This one is a bit raw, but is direct.

7-23-11

It's appreciated. These bitching a$$holes have cut off my cash flow by
moaning about me asking for donations if the person felt it was warranted.
This hobby is full of di*kheads. Even one of my moderators hates the way I
talk about TRA. I told him if he wanted to leave, he was welcome to and I'd
get Jerry Irvine to take his place. ;-)

Verna & I deeply feel this loss. Darrell was a good friend and the best all around rocketeer/hobbist we've ever known, bar none. He was just a great guy. IMHO, his contribution to the hobby, especially the internet end of it, is far beyond anything anyone else has ever done. We are blessed to have known him.

Jerry, thanks for your post, parts of it made me smile for a moment and briefly took away the sense of loss.

Thanks. I hope to have more to say when the remberance article is published. Darrell wants us to get off our a$$es and write articles, support vendors, and fly rockets!

After reading this, take a moment and order from some vendor you have never ordered from before, or not for a very long time. Then write a product review for it. He would just love that.

Jerry
