Default The future?

I'm watching Boston's Chronicle about futuristic tech today. I predict we'll have microwave-refrigerators very soon. Throw your nuke and puke meal in the microwave and keep it cold until it's time to cook it. Call your MW to cook your meal just as you get home. A neat idea?

I dunno.

There is no doubt that this would be handy for many busy people. But it sounds an awful lot like those Automated Kitchen of the Future or Self Cleaning Houses that they used to show at the World's Faire.

At best, it will be a hard to maintain weird hybrid device.

If you want to redesign the fridge, make it easier to clean! Put in LED lights here and there rather than one bulb. Put in multiple doors so you can access just the milk. Use super-insulating materials so the walls don't have to be so thick.

Me, I like cooking. I make my own microwave meals, sort of. I cook from scratch big batches of stuff (soup, casseroles) on weekends and freeze it in one-serving containers. I have two or three and sometimes more things to choose from. That and some steamed vegetables and a salad and I'm all set.

Well, there is serious talk about 3D printing of food. That's pretty replicator-like.

The feedstock could be any carbs or protein you can puree, flavor, and stabilize.

One suggestion: Insects! You grow them on sewage, grain processing leftovers, and the parts of animals that even McDonalds can't turn into McRibs.

There's a project that turns bugs into cheap, high-quality poultry and hog feed. No reason not to eliminate the middleman and turn the bugs into printing "ink."

How's THAT for The Future? The real deal always has a way of turning out to be disturbing and weird in ways that all but a few SF writers dare to imagine.

I saw a commercial for a multi-door refrigerator, so that one has come true.

Since I first saw Bluetooth, I have been waiting for ear rings and face piercing jewelry to contain a phone.

As for replicator, all I want is a small "Mr. Replicator" to put out a cup of coffee on demand in the morning!
