Default Orbital Transport Lab DOM # 73

Well I finally got around to painting & finishing my “OTL-7A”. This was an Estes DOM winner in June of ’71 and I’ve always wanted to build one. I omitted the “fin holders” and instead epoxied a small steel pin in each 1/8th dowel to drive s bit deeper into the fin material and then epoxied the dowel to the fin. The fins/solar panels were then fixed to the 2050 adaptor ring with epoxy. I then dremeled out 4 1/8 notches in another 2050 ring which was fixed on top of the assembly for added strength. This was a first cut at the model and I am pleased with how it turned out. I’ll be replacing the engine bell with a spare Saturn V bell that I am going to modify and I’m still not sure about the capsule in red. I am going to add a few more decals and put some RCS thrusters on it with a paint pen…we’ll see. Thanks to Sandman for the decals ! I tried painting solar panels as a kid …used piece of screen from a porch door as a mask…it didn’t go well for a variety of reasons !

That came out real nice!

The Saturn V engine bell is a great idea.

I have a bunch of them I got from Christine at Estes yeas ago. I just wanted the Apollo Capsule but she sold me the whole plastic set.

I could have sworn the original used a Mercury-style capsule. Was there a similar but different design or am I just not remembering correctly?

The instructions say a BNC-60AB.

That looks like a Gemini capsule without the adapter shroud to me.

Very nice job, I really like the paint scheme. I'll me interested to hear how the fins hold up. Mine has a tendency to break the triangle pieces you omitted and also break off from the dowel.

You can see the problem area in this photo;

Thank you for the kind words ! I'll post launch results later in the following week. We have a large scout launch this weekend and I'm considering sending her up with an A8-3 initially . What motors have you used ?

BTW..I am going to change the capsule to black...just looks more true to life.

I have used B4-4's in mine most of the time. I think that I may have used a B6-4 once or twice.

I haven't had the problem with breaking fins usually. I did have one of the dowels break one time.

A tip from my stick and tissue airplane days.

I've replaced a lot of 1/8" wood dowels with 1/8" bamboo skewers (get 'em at any grocery store!).

A bit harder to sand smooth but a whole bunch stronger than hardwood dowels.
