Default I need help, but not sure you guys are the ones to ask…

Well, I have built the first few models on my rolltop desk. It worked ok, was a bit cramped. Though it works great for tying flies, there is a bit of stress building rockets on it as I fear a chemical spill of some sort, or an errant razor blade slip.

I looked on craigslist for a drafting table/craft table. Went to look at two and they were in poor shape, not to mention the owners were way too high on price. So, I decided to look for a new one and found this unit. Certainly not the most robust unit, but I think it will serve well. It is not too big to overpower my den, and big enough where I think I can have a bit of elbow room. If I need more room, or build a very large rocket, I guess I will just do it in the shop. The table folds up nicely so I can remove it from my den for those inactive periods.

Anyway, excited about this and it will certainly work for planes in a few years when I get into that…

Post the brand and model ID of the unit, please! That's a nice workstation!

Did the hutch come with it, or was that a separate item?

Below is a link. I actually bought the table from a local art shop for $119. I didn’t realize they had this unit and was looking at a tad smaller unit, which had white legs. He told me he had one with black legs, so we rung it up. That was when he realized he did not have the actual unit in Black. So, he gave me this one for the same price. Oddly enough, just $19 more than what these people online were trying to get for abused stuff. Again, this is not the best table, but I do like the portability/fold up aspect.

The chair came from Office Max; regularly $109, on sale for $89, and with my coupon brought it to $69 out the door. It is a nice sturdy and comfortable chair; much better than the one at the art shop had for $139... http://www.officemax.com/catalog/sku.jsp?productId=prod2480020&history=onm4amqx|prodPage~15^freeText~stool^paramV alue~true^refine~1^region~1^param~return_skus^retu rn_skus~Y

As for the hutch, lots of these tables have options for a storage tray on the side. I thought that was a good idea, but thought $40 was a bit outrageous. I built the hutch with some scrap melamine and wainscoting I had in my woodshop. (That’s why its of ¾” stock rather than ½”). Didn’t want an elaborate shelf, but instead one that just allows to keep tools and parts handy while also protecting drying parts, etc. I also wanted to keep as much surface area on the table available as well for larger projects, which is why the first shelf is 10” high. Equally as important, I wanted something aesthetically pleasing as not to create an eyesore in my den. A quick few hour project and not bad for “free”. BTW, I was limited in length of the unit per the scrap wood I had, thus the reason it does not span the length of the table….

Wow, that link to "OfficeAnything" was a trip down Nostalgia Lane! I remember those Mayline (or similar, might have been Dietzen) drafting desks from high school. I spent about 1500 hours during my sophomore-junior years at a desk identical to those.

AutoCAD was just a sci-fi glimmer in some nerd's brain cells...

In case you aren't using a desk mat yet... Regardless of the desk you use, a self healing mat is always a big help. They come in different sizes and after they've received enough abuse you can just throw them away and buy a new one.

They sell them everywhere. Here's an example of the kind I'm using: http://www.michaels.com/24-x-36-Rot...s-tools&start=1

Ohhh, agree with the self-healing mat. Get one. Also get a plastic floor mat to carch any errant spills from glue or expoxy. Saved my floor more than once.

I do have one; you can see it in the pic on the left/rear of the table. it is translucent; I felt that mike work well for those times I need to put a light underneath as to cut out a pattern in tape of the like.

OK I see it now.

The way I work, the bigger the better. I bought a big mat that covers most of the desk, since I tend to make a pretty big mess.

This is what I use as my building table...

I have 2 tables end to end, with mats on each for under $75.
