Default Unusual Arcas

I was cleaning out my SD cards and came across these pictures from inside the museum at White Sands Missile Range.

It's a standard Arcas with the somewhat unusual longer (22", No. 8, 1:4.9) ogive, not often seen on a single stage Arcas. The fins and nose are black, as is the lettering. The rocket and parachute container are white.

Maybe Gordy could make some decals when he gets his Alps back.

The letters look like common black Helvetica. Do you know the size of the letters?

Nope.

It didn't even occur to me to measure until you asked. I'd guess 2".

I am an idiot. . . . Next time I go, I'll measure.

GH,

Here's a picture. The booster is done save for some touchup of the lower roll pattern on the fin edges and a clear coat. The parachute is ready, with new shroud lines. I added a Kevlar and elastic recovery harness. Decals are by Excelsior and they are fabulous. The only screw-up was mine: somehow my launch lug ended up too low and the black center stripe was not long enough so I hand-painted the gap.

And then there's the capsule. I am on my fourth try on the escape tower. The motor is a pine dowel with cardstock details. The long rails are 1/12 dowels. I have sanded a number of toothpicks down to smaller diameter to use as the cross members and diagonals. The base of the tower is a sliver of a motor block with the V frames epoxied to it.

As an aside, the carbon fiber tower attempt was not a complete failure and frankly shows some promise. But I need to learn more about bonding it before I try a tower.

Weren't you going to build one of your K41's over the winter?

I was going to tackle another K-41 (I have an opened but complete one and two sealed) this winter but have not gotten to it.

Have been busy arranging the hardware/servos/engine mounting/retractible landing gear on my Hangar 9 Phoenix 7 R/C Pattern Aircraft. It is a so-called ARF, but requires a LOT of set-up work to get everything correct due to being a fibreglass fuselage precision aerobatics aircraft. I'm using a vintage O.S .61 FSR ABC engine with Hatori Tuned Pipe, Macs Header, Eflite retractable landing gear, and Vintage Futaba J-series 8JN radio with all-new Futaba Coreless servos. A real vintage late 70's/early 80's 140mph+ pattern ship.

The last K-41 I built was in like 1982. I have laser cut Semroc fin sets for my 3 K-41 kits, and have purchased some carbon fibre rods in 3 diameters for the tower, but that's as far as I have gotten. The Semroc fin sets are worth every penny to save cutting time. They do have to be contour sanded, but not having to cut the like 7 pieces for EACH fin is a major pre-fabrication step I'm not willing to pass up. The carbon fibre tower assembly should be no problem but tedious. Have not decided if I'm going to use carbon-compatible CA or epoxy to assemble.

That looks like one of the two Arcturus nose cones on the Arcas (the Arcturus nose cones were "backward-compatible" with the older Arcas); I've included two Arcturus links below. Also, there's a Black Brant VII standing next to that Arcas (see: https://www.flickr.com/photos/48113599@N04/4975456194/ and http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/F...I_rocket-01.jpg )! Regarding the Arcas' long nose cone:

I was looking at the Atlantic Research Corporation Arcturus data sheet (see: http://www.oldrocketforum.com/attac...achmentid=26670 and http://www.oldrocketforum.com/attac...achmentid=26671 ), and I noticed that it could use either of two nose cones--the No. 10 (which was 46 cm [18.1"] long), a 4:1 ogive, *or* the No. 8 (which was 57 cm [22"] long), a 5:1 ogive. The Arcturus round shown in the photograph appears to have the No. 8 (5:1 ogive) nose cone, as does the large-scale Rocketarium Arcturus scale kit.
