Next Project: Quest Big Rage.
The next project to hit my bench is a model that I recently obtained from a friend in Colorado Springs.
This Big Rage was built back in the mid 1990s, but was never finished or flown. The bird is an easy to build beginner's model utilizing a plastic fin can and nose cone from Quest's version of the Nike Smoke. Standing over 2-1/2 feet tall this bird is essentially a really long Nike Smoke, with an included payload section. The model requires a repair on the leading edge of one of the plastic fins, and the installation of a shock cord. There is an included length of Kevlar in the booster, it just needs an elastic cord attached. The nose cone needs a little bit of work as well, having highly prominent seams and glue smears. Lastly, I cannot abide a model rocket in my fleet that features hot pink nose cone and fins, so a bit of painting is in order. I intend to use this model as the primary booster vehicle for a newly acquired 808 key chain camera, so I'm sure the Big Rage will log a lot of flights in the near future.

I had one of those! I think I sold it before moving north.
It is a really nice rocket, but MAN those colors are god-awful. I don't recall if I painted over the pink awfulness.

It's one of my daughter's rockets. She loved the colors.

I have one of these and part of its charm for me was the weird name and horrific colors.

The next step in getting this baby ready to fly is to fix the damaged fin. A little plastic filler putty and sanding took care of that.
The nose cone required a little TLC with the edge of an Xacto knife and sandpaper to smooth out the seams and glue smears. Next, the biggie: getting rid of that hideous pink color! A rattle can of bright red worked wonders. Looks good in red The cool thing about this rocket is that it can be flown in two configurations: with or without the payload section. Attached are pics of both.

I like the red cone and fins.
Just Saying: Add some white trim and some star stickers for a 4th of July theme rocket.

Back to the work bench to continue rendering the Big Rage flight-worthy....
The next area of attention is the booster shock cord. The original elastic shock cord was cut off and discarded and a new 40" length of 1/4" elastic was attached to the Kevlar line already built into the model. A heavy duty snap swivel is attached to the free end of the cord. This will facilitate interchangeability with the nose cone or payload section. It was while messing around with the shock cord that I noticed the model was lacking a launch lug! I quick trip to the parts stash yielded up a couple of lugs. The lug positions were marked out and paint scraped away for a good glue bond. Good thing I remembered that the Nike Smoke nose cone has a wide section near the base, so I had to make a couple of 1/8" thick lug standoffs. Being a bit lazy with this rocket refurb, I did not want to re-paint the booster tube to include the new lugs, so out came a blue Sharpie marker. The lugs are darker blue than the surrounding tube, but I can live with that. Next step is decals and markings....

The Quest Big Rage is now finished, replete with a set of rub-on fleet number decals, and a two inch wide band of chrome silver Monokote.
I plan to take this bird with me to a SCORE launch in Pueblo, Colorado this coming Saturday (Jul 6th), and air it out on a C6-5, with an 808 key chain cam along for the ride....
