Edward H.White, American astronaut walked in space on this date in 1965.

Less than two years after his history-making walk in space, White was killed in January 1967 along with fellow astronauts Virgil "Gus" Grissom and Roger Chaffee during a rehearsal of the launch countdown routine for their upcoming Apollo 1 flight. Midway through their rehearsal, a fire broke out in the pure oxygen-filled cabin. All three succumbed to asphyxiation and smoke inhalation.
