Default Old Estes Parts

Below is a list of parts that Kurt Schachner emailed to me in May 1998. These parts may or may not still be available. Call Christine at Estes to inquire. I've added the NCW-1 part # that Kurt talked about in another thread. Back at that time I was also able to order a bunch of Sandhawk plastic parts sets from Estes. Unfortunately, I don't recall that part #. Those are probably long gone by now. If Kurt or anyone has any other part #'s for other parts, please add them to this post.

P/N Part Price

31212 Corkscrew Upper Payload Sect. 0.38
31224 Heavy 24mm Engine Mount Tube 0.89
30160 Engine Hook Retainer Rings for 31224 0.29
34125 Mercury Capsule Set 3.76
31525 Mercury Atlas Main Body Tube 3.96
30300 BT-3 Tube 0.20
31053 BT-100 Tube 0.96
31150 M/A Fin Tube (slip-fit inside BT-50) 0.50
38280 NCW-1 Nose Cone Weight used in Space Shuttle

These parts are useful as follows:

31212 This tubing (used in the Estes E2X kits) is very close in OD to BT-52. It can therefore substitute for the upper body tube in a Thor-Agena B or a SPEV. You have to send the tube to Bill at Balsa Machining Service and have him adapt the balsa parts to fit this tubing.

31224 (and the 30160 retainer) is just thicker than the usual BT-50 and makes good engine mount tubes. It is used in the current Mercury Atlas.

34125 Buy these capsules to make repro Mercury Redstones. The tubing used as the External Tank on the Estes Shuttle is Centuri ST-20 which is what you need for the body tube.

31525 In reality the same tube used to make the Centuri 1/45 scale Little Joe II.

30300 BT-3 used in the old Estes 1/70 scale Apollo capsule escape tower.

31053 BT-100 used as the body tube for the Mars Lander.

31150 Nice to make removable fin units and whatever.

I remember seeing these, I think in the RMR or OldRockets archives. I can remember printing off a bunch of the OldRockets stuff so that I could read it when I was away from my desk at night. Seems to me it was a stack of paper about 3 inches thick. Some entertaining and informative reading, if you can get through all of the "Anybody here?" posts early on.

I called a few years ago to get two sets Apollo Capsule parts to make two new escape tower trusses for my vintage Centuri Saturn V and 1B. I was told that I could only buy one set for $10 and it would cost $10 to ship for a total of $20 because people would try to buy up their stock to sell for a profit. I told her I had two Centuri Saturns along with two more Estes Saturns and that I wasn't trying to hoard parts to sell. I said I could even email photos of my damaged rockets as proof, but she told me I could only have one set and that's it. That meant that I would have had to order one set for $20 and then have somebody else to order another set for me for a total of $40 just to replace the trusses of two rockets. I still have the motor portions of both LES systems, but the truss work was destroyed on both rockets years ago. Needless to say, I couldn't justify $40 for a fraction of an ounce of plastic so I never did repair them.

I called about these two items last week. No longer available. Also, I was directed to another toll free number off their automated menu, to inquire about spare parts (an 866 number I believe, don't have it here in front of me). Customer service was very friendly. Talked to a guy at first who said these part numbers no longer appeared in the database, but he could get someone to do some additional checking 'at the warehouse'. He took my name and phone number and in about 30 minutes a nice lady called to say that indeed, these items were no longer available as spare parts. "Any idea whether they might be re-issued as spare parts or in a kit?", I asked. Politely, she responded that "Well, they typically don't tell us those kind of things here, but not that I know of."

Didn't inquire about any other parts.

I seriously doubt any of those parts are still available. I posted that information to RMR back in 1998! A lot of water has passed under the "Estes bridge" since then

Please be advised, many vintage parts have been discarded. When Estes moved their warehouse from Pueblo to Penrose this year, a massive cleanup accured.

And, when the customer service parts supply was moved from the main building to the warehouse building in the back, many parts were thrown away.

As I have mentioned previously, wherever the Estes trash goes, is a treasure trove of parts sitting there, probably buried.
And the current policy is, if it's not needed, crush it !!!

You can check with Christine, don't use the 866 number though, use this number 1-800-525-7561 X-216 or you can email customer service.

Good luck...
