Looking great! This is usually the point in a build when I realize I forgot to attach the launch lug.

Great work on all your Viking research. It surprises me sometimes how much
is learned when clones are made.

I'm glad the Apogee (originally Starlight) plastic nose cones worked for you.
The Apogee PNC-24C and PNC-24D also fit the heavy wall BT-50H.
The shoulder lip on these cones is a bit wider so it does work pretty well in the ST-7 tubes
and even better in my new Odd'l Rockets BT-20H tubing.

Thanks. The research is fun...though I never set out to do this one until this whole decal thing came up. I still need to write a coherent story for the Alpha configuration. That will be several pages to account for its 53-year history. I also have what i need to do the Nova Payloader.

The launch lug is on the model but hidden in the picture because there are some really visible bubbles in the fillets.

Did you use yellow (carpenter's) glue for the fillets?

Actually I was experimenting with something called Elmer’s Extreme School Glue. Normally I use that thickened Titebond. I redid them once to fill bubble holes and then got impatient to shoot the primer since I had a brief weather window. It was obvious after the primer they were there....but I sprayed the gloss anyway - again, outdoor spray painting weather in this part of the country this time of the year is pretty rare.

Here's a couple of pictures of your Viking from the launch today. Landed really close to the pad.

Thanks, Glen.

Here's a shot with it on the pad (both closeups focused on the background so are blurry) and one post-landing shot. It popped a fin, as these often do.

My takeaway are two things.

Where do all these nose cone molds go? They are used well below their potential duty cycle. Are they lost to vendors, corporate switches, laziness and incompetence? Can I go pick them up or have more parts made?

The Viking while ubuquitous was a quite forgettable rocket. However what is interesting is it was engineered to be near cost free to make, with die cut paper fins, small paper tubes, low cost two cavity nose cone mold requiring assembly, and almost all bulk packed.

The Estes Firehawk comes with a red plastic version of the Viking's molded NC. I picked up a couple of the kits from Rocketry Works' closeout sale, basically for the NCs and chrom-ish silver BTs. Maybe I'll stick the fin cans on a chunk of other tube or something.

Having read through the recently-bumped and linked Akela-1 and Viking threads has led to the realization that one of those red nose cones topping a Viking with reprinted Centuri waterslides would be fitting. Thanks, Bernard, for another good and fun idea on the build list.
