Fin Construction
I am hoping someone might have some construction suggestions. I'd like to replicate the fins in the picture (minus the thickness ofc). I thought about wet molded balsa sheet or perhaps split body tubes.
Thanks in advance. I hope I have this image linked correctly. Last edited by MG13 : 06-18-2011 at 10:58 PM. |

I can't see the image. I checked the link and it's an "https" address, which is a secure URL. I imagine you will need to save the image and attach it here, or save it to an image hosting site like photobucket and link it if it is too large to attach.

I would go with split tubes. If you need more strength, use thicker tube or a piece of tube backed up with a piece of coupler. Bill

Sheet Styrene plastic might be a good choice. You can bend them over a mandrel so they will all be the same shape. Can even use a heat gun gently to assist.
Wetted balsa might work. Lash them to a mandrel and let them dry that way. It will be harder to fill the grain and do a smooth finish on the wood this way, though, I would think. Allen |
