Farside Clone
This winter I spent far too much time on this Farside clone, which I'll lose sooner or later. It is all Semroc parts, with a decal from excelsior. This was a fun build - did everything old school, from coupler style engine mounts to aero-gloss balsa filler & sanding sealer with a lacquer finish.
I put her up a few weeks ago on a B14-0/A8-0/A8-5 combo, and she flew great. A generous club member gave me a few B14-0's so I could fly her again, which I intend to. I love flying these old designs.

Very nice Farside! I'm also envious you managed to obtain some B14-0s

Nice looking Farside. Now it's time to increase the pucker factor with a 3x C6 flight, with the Chinese/Quest version in the sustainer.

PaulK, Very nice, and I love the classic paint job and decals. Just did a big flashback to the late 60s. I never built the Farside, but a friend built one, and I wimped out and built the Apogee II ... But I sure remember building a lot of the coupler and cardstock type of engine mounts. And all the sanding to get them into the body tube! I built an Astron Cobra clone last year, since that was a kit I never built as a kid, but always loved the styling. You've got me thinking Farside now ...

IMO, the B14-0's are a must for this bird. Since they're so scarce, I opted to build my 1st stage to use 24mm boosters. I suppose, on a really calm day, with a long rod, you could use a B6-0 or C6-0 in the 1st stage, with light motors in the upper stages, but it's still kinda risky without a high thrust motor in the 1st stage. I had a Farside-X back in the day.... the slender version is pretty. Doug's idea of using a 24mm motor in the first stage makes sense to me.
I can't remember what I flew my Farside-X on but since the few remaining motors I have from back then are 1/4A and 1/2A boosters I suspect they were involved. I remember it staging the first time barely off the launch rod.....

My personal experience doesn't include any ¼A boosters (yet, ) but with the newer motors, including ½A3-0T's, the staging has always been up in the air a ways. OTOH, I've burned a few of the old ½A boosters from long ago, and they do stage barely off the rod, or so it seems. So I can only conclude the old ¼A boosters were very low at staging. Doug .

I've staged a Beta on 1/4A3's and it didn't even clear the rod before staging. (It did barely clear the rod when I flew it without paint or primer) I can't imagine a Farside even moving with a 1/4A booster.
