Default Vintage Estes Mars Snooper II Build

My next build is the vintage Mars Snooper II. I really enjoyed the original Mars Snooper build so this should also be fun.

Speaking of Mars Snooper II...have you or anyone else here ever seen a Mars Snooper II with black not white decals?

I had one customer insist that his set was black and wanted black replacements.

I just never heard of that one.

The original Mars Snooper had black decals, but the II never did. Rocket ALWAYS medium-dark red with WHITE decal. Person claiming they had one with a black decal was a KOOK that bumped their head hard.

I have wanted to get another MS II off ebay for a long time but they always go for WAY too much $$$. I always liked the "II" far more than the original. Wanted to get the Jumbo Q-modeling one but they have been 'coming back soon' for YEARS.

I have her all built and ready for balsa sealer. First I have to apply some hobby balsa filler since the die crunched fins are in pretty bad shape. The build was pretty straight forward with some minor issues. The shrouds were once again perfect, I preform them, tape and dry fit. Once everything lines up I glue the shrouds and let dry. The fiber fins were not the correct shape so I had to trim them up. The balsa was pretty bad and will need some repairing before painting. Now if I start replacing vintage kit balsa with laser cut balsa is it still a vintage build? The lugs get glued on the fins with the use of a printed guide, that should be fun when it comes to sanding the fins. I am still straightening out the dowels for the legs, they are all bent.

Well, I have been real busy the last few months and had to put rocket and airplane building on hold. I finally had sometime to work on this bird so I sanded the balsa smooth, added wood filler to a couple of damaged areas from being die crushed and brushed on 4 coats of Aerogloss balsa sealer. I then sprayed with primer and sanded smooth and finished with top coat. I am running out of my old style Krylon so I used Rustoleum 2X for the red. The red looks great and it is glossy as can be. The paint goes on really smooth but for some reason it wants to attract small dust particles so not a flawless finish. I spray paint outside so I am limited but the old style Krylon does not attract particles like this paint. Anyway you can only see them in the right light and up close. With time being limited and many rockets to build, I will just let it go and apply the decals. All and all for an Enamel this appears to be a good paint, but I am will to try different enamels if anyone knows of a better brand. Also I am finishing up an old original Centuri Screaming Eagle rocket.

The vintage decals went on pretty good, little yellowing but that is ok they are genuine.

Beautiful work again, Scigs.

Decades ago, I found the fin can to the Screaming Eagle but, being an Estes snob, I had no idea what it came from.
