I was vaguely aware of their reputation, but as I say I had never had that experience though I'd flown quite a few, most of them in this particular Fat Boy. BUT.....the LCO at the launch introduced the flight by bringing that up, saying something to the effect that these motors had been known to go up.....then he gave the count and pushed the button...and finished by saying "just like that....."

*sigh*

added: picture for Scott's amusement....

In case anybody's keeping score, the date code was 5Z4. I have more of these....

It actually looks like it could be returned to flying status fairly easily - so maybe it'll get to fly on a Q-Jet after all. This particular model also experienced my one and only 18/20 reloadable flight...wherein it went unstable. But that was several years ago now.

Yep, looks repairable to me.

Might even be more fun than the first time.... just like that.

Year "Z".

Year "X" were extremely bad, with most failing and with many split casings.

The ones remaining in my 18mm motor box are either that date code (5 Z 4) or 6 Y 9. I think I have two more three packs in another place.

I'll find out as soon as they are available - I have two on order at AC Supply.

Bill Stine told me the 1/200th Saturn V should fly very nicely on the Quest Q-Jet motors (C12 & D16).

Nope.

When I was writing my NARAM-60 Manufacturer's Forum article for Sport Rocketry, I sent Bill an e-mail asking some questions about the 1/200th scale Saturn V model.

In his reply, Bill mentioned that the model should fly quite nicely on the Quest Q-Jet motors.

AC Supply www.acsupplyco.com has the Estes 1:200 scale RTF Saturn V (EST2160) for $48.99. They're also offering the 1:100 scale 50th Anniversary Saturn V kit (EST1969)--which comes with a 1:100 scale Lunar Module Eagle--(maybe it would fly on MicroMaxx motors, perhaps even in both the Descent *and* Ascent Stages [with clear plastic stabilizing sticks]?) for $53.99.
