Go Curiosity!
Here's to a safe and successful landing on Mars in about an hour and a half! I suppose there'll be a few nubby fingernails in mission control waiting to hear back on this one.
Go JPL! Earl

I'm trying not to invest any hope or enthusiasm in the mission . . . it would just be too crushing if that crazy landing system malfunctions.
That said . . . . . . here's a great guide to tracking the progress of the landing: http://boingboing.net/2012/08/02/ma...ml#previouspost

Greatly relieved. That rocket crane deal seemed so hairy.

Yea, that wouldn't have been my first choice for a gentle landing but apparently those guys know a bit more than I do.

Good ol' Yankee know-how...........and that's coming from a Canuck. Congrats to those boys on getting it done. Now let's sit back and enjoy the show for the next couple of years!
Joe PS.............oh yeah, by the way, the Russians are still '0-fer', and not even trying any more, and I think ESA has an orbiter around Mars but failed in their attempt to put down a lander. If it wasn't for the good old USA we would have almost no advancement of our knowledge of the planets of our solar system. Keeping the dream alive! Joe |

Emmm, well... a little bit of a world effort as well. I know some German companies are involved I was glued to the computer screen and was relieved that it landed as planed. Really great work from all involved! Lets just hope it's all worth the 2.5 somewhat billion of $$$...

Possibly one of the most complex methods for achieving a landing ever devised, and yet it worked. Given the number of elements which had to work, and the ways in which they could fail, even more impressive. A Space 1999 solution.
