Default My Latest Glider Build

I just wanted to share my latest rocket build. We have a NAR Regional next month in my area so I thought I would make a 1.5 times Upscale of the new Estes Tercel Boost Glider that will be out later this year. Its wingspan is 16.25”. The wing is made out of 1/8” while the tail feathers are 3/32” balsa. The body and motor pylon are both made out of two layers of 3/32” balsa with a layer of Tyvek paper between the sides. The small EstesTercel uses Tyvek between it’s sides as well and I have never broke a fuselage to date no matter how bad the thing cart wheeled when landing after a bad hand tossing..

I still need to add at least one layer of Nitrate Dope to the surface of the model and spray on a little color to help see it both in the air and on the ground. Assuming it doesn’t blow apart on a B4-2 motor it should glide real nice. It may not be competitive but that’s OK since I’m flying it just for fun anyway.

John,
I like the multi-dihedral, but am confused about the pod/glider interface. Can you enlighten us prior to the release of the glider kit?

Two hooks on the outside of the pod standoff, engages cut outs on the outside of the boom. A fancier execution of the type of pod/glider hook you see on the Edmonds kits.

I like it, looks slick.

Wow that looks really nice..... I have been wanting to build a boost glider for awhile. I have been waiting for the Fake Wulf kits to be available again. I don't see this kit on Estes website .

Nice looking. How's it fly/glide?

I wish I could answer your question but we had 18 + mph winds at our last launch so we didn't fly many rockets and I wasn't going to risk this model in such conditions. Hopefully in couple more weeks I'll get a chance to fly her.

Default Test Flight Today

I was able to test fly my B BG model today. It most likely won't win any contests, unless of course I hit a big thermal and everyone else doesn't but it does fly very well. She boosts pretty stright and is easy to see. I put a video of the two test flights up on my web site. The video only shows the boost and seperation. I wasn't able to track it with the video camera past that.

The model was tail heavy on the first fligth. I believe some of the stalls were because of lift. it even did a loop once. It flew for 45 seconds on this fligt.

On the second fligth it was pretty well trimmed out. It didn't hit any lift but it was up for 60 seconds. I will remove a BB size piece of clay for my first contest flight in a couple weeks.

Nice boosts. If the smaller production one boosts as well it should be a great performer.

Watching that makes me wonder just how many rockets have been launched from that spot since 1961.
