Default Flat Black Foil

I'm currently working on my scratch built 1:12 scale Lunar Module model and I've encountered a minor problem. In addition to the two shades of gold foil and the silver foil that covers the LM there is also a flat black foil. Has anyone found a flat black paint that sticks well to mylar or aluminum foil or should I use a crinkled paper painted black?

Any idea appreciated.

Try Micheal's.

They have a huge "paper" aisle.

There's bound to be somthing that will work.

Or maybe a scrapbooking store.

Or maybe black mylar from a ballon/party store.

You know those black "Over The Hill" baloons.

Mario,

If you want to try using foil for this process, you might try taking a 6" x 6" square and secure it to a flat and stiff backing board. Lightly sand the foil with fine grit sandpaper to give the foil some tooth. Prime the matte side of the foil with a suitable primer (I am thinking aerosol or airbrush), then paint black. Cut a test area and apply to a practice surface. The main problem is a fold that would perhaps cause a fissure in the paint that would reveal the primer/foil underneath. I don't know if it would work but it is what I would try.

If you have an old tyme hobby shop around, Bare Metal Foil has a flat black foil that I've used on real space static models but that's going to be pretty expensive given the amount of foil you need.

And by the way, that LM looks awesome. Is that pine its made out of? Would you mind posting some more pictures.

I've found that the black high temperature Rustoleum sticks well to motorcylce pipes (part steel, part chrome) and barbecue grills. I don't know how well it would stick to foil or mylar. I would guess just fine for the foil and not likely for the mylar. It would cost about $5 to find out.

You might also try something like using 3M Super 77 or Hi Strength 90 to stick black crepe paper to aluminum foil or mylar. That might be an interesting look. The Hi Strength 90 has a significantly higher temperature tolerance than the Super 77. My local Home Depot stocks both in the paint department with the glues.
