They can have the prototype if they want it. I think I can do better with the next one. I'd suspect that the performance of the IR camera, which will have a wooden lens, will be sub-par, so the joke's on them. |

Rusto 2x white primer is on. Found a few gaps in fillets around the wings that I'll need to fill, but mostly looks OK.
The nose cone will eventually be painted separately, once I, you know, actually make it. |

After a four month epic search of every dollar store, supermarket, Michaels, Target, Staples, Amazon, you name it - I finally scored at a dollar store and found a good item from which to fashion the IR dome. See picture 1. And I get ten of them to play with for a buck. Picture 2 shows what one of them looks like.
They're ever so slightly larger than I wanted (1 1/8" vs. 1") but they'll do. After cutting the dome off just above the green with an Atlas hobby saw, I sanded the heck out of the thing until it was almost exactly 1" in diameter. Then 2 coats of Future were applied inside and out, to protect it from handling. See pictures 3 and 4. Due to starting off a bit oversized, the curvature is not *exactly* what I wanted, but it's close enough and should look good, at least until the first flight when it'll probably get scratched all to heck. Oh well! The rest of the nose still needs to be fabricated. Soon. |

If any of your local department stores or malls have FOIZ vending machines (see: http://www.google.com/search?ei=Zvs...1.0.vS7pJPNsuQY ), some of the plastic "bubbles" that the little toys come in might be a good "fit."

Thar be paint
The grey topcoat is on. It came out... OK, given what a lousy painter I am. Some areas did suffer for the lack of a filler-primer step... I intentionally omitted it because (a) many parts were constructed directly onto the rocket, and therefore, couldn't be pre-primed, and (b) after assembly, there is no way to sand the whole thing.
After the final matte clear coat is applied (post-decals), a lot of the surface imperfections should largely disappear. At least that's what I'm hoping. I think the grey is (Rustoleum 2x Winter Grey Gloss) is somewhat darker than I wanted (hard to tell in the picture), but it should be satisfactory. It will certainly look like an IRIS-T. |

Ah, that's a bit of history I was unfamiliar with.
Flattered by the comparison, but I assure you if you saw the rocket up close you would not be making it. Anyway, I'm *finally* getting my order from Erockets tomorrow that'll include the nose cone(s) I need for this thing, so I can get that going. |
