I use rustoleum spray on everything. I can get it to look almost as nice as an automotive finish.
On my K-6 Ranger, just for fun, I went overboard by applying six coats, wet sanding between each. It's so smooth and glossy it's been mistaken for injection molded plastic.
The only trouble I've had is that the spray nozzles can be temperamental. I usually soak them in thinner after each use.
