Excelsior needs some decal scan help.

I have a problem with scans, either off the internet in just about any format.

The problem is "scale". Rarely do I get a scale reference with a decal so I know I've drawn it to the exact correct size.

Specifically I need a scale reference for all of the Centuri Super Kits.

I have the decals all drawn but I need to know exactly how big they are supposed to be.

I need

ESS Raven
USS America
SSV Scorpion
UFO Invader

I need a 1" square or similar on a scan of the original decals. The decal itself is unimportant. As long as I have the basic outline I have the decal already drawn.

Re scaling will be easy.

USS American Scan

Here's a scan with ruler for the USS America (got a rare day off from work and dug this one out a few minutes ago).

I can probably get the UFO Invader and Scorpion a bit later this eve. I have the Raven as well, but the kit is unopened at this point.

Let me know if this scan helps and if so I'll get at least the other two for ya.

From experience I can tell you that it is also helpful if you can provide a single accurate dimension on the sheet. For example in the case of this scan, the measured dimension of the top of the United States flag is... That eliminates any scaling issues or manipulating the image until "his inch" equals "your inch".

Thanks Earl!

That makes two I have finished and re scaled.

Actually my USS America was right on. But at least now it verified! And the SSV Scorpion is finished.

Remember, I don't need the entire decal re scanned Just a good part with a scale so I can gauge the size.

Don't open a sealed kit. Not needed! Someone will have the rest of the decals, I'm sure of it.

Here's the UFO Invader and just as an extra data point one of the SSV Scorpion, though I know you said you were good on that one (it didn't take long to slap each of these on the scanner and take a quick scan).

I know they are bigger sections of the decal sheet than you actually needed for verification purposes, but at 72 dpi the file sizes were pretty small.

ESS Raven

....and finally the ESS Raven. This one is fresh out of the bag.... Don't panic: I checked and verified that I had a second Raven kit (that I intend to build) and opened it (actually, this series of vintage Super Kitd is next up in my build que.....finishing off a vintage Estes Omega right now).

Matter of fact, if my vintage decals for these don't hold up well come application time, I'll probably be back with you to get new sets of each of these! :)

Glad to have the time today to be able to lend some assistance. That's a rare commodity most times it seems....

Glad to help! Those are some pretty massive decal sheets, as rocketry decal sheets go. The Super Kits may not have gone over 'super-great' back in the day for Centuri, but I always thought they were pretty decent looking kits, not to mention 'super-big' for their day, too. The only one that I was not too crazy about design-wise was the UFO Invader. A bit 'campy' I guess.

I never had any of them then (they were a bit pricey for the pocketbook), but I've got 'em all now and will be building them soon, probably starting with either the USS America or the Raven.

What is your procedure for producing a new vintage decal that you don't currently carry? I have a vintage Centuri Centurion that I completed some months ago, but the original decal has badly yellowed (going on a white rocket ain't gonna look so good). Last I looked, I don't think you have that decal currently. What's the process for 'requesting' a stab at that one? I can provide a scan of the original......

Thanks,

Earl
